Saturday: Alpha Consumer Album Release Party

Alpha Consumer reminds us of the excellence of old-school American oddball rock. Members of this Minneapolis-based three piece have worked with the likes of Bon Iver, Arcade Fire, Andrew Bird, Chuck Statler, Brother Ali, Anais Mitchell, Pieta Brown, A Prairie Home Companion, and more. Their new album, Meat, was inspired by a shark bite and the resulting nightmarish food cravings that accompanied the post-hospital prescribed pharmaceuticals. All this, piled onto pre-existing crippling loneliness led to the perfect cocktail for brand new smash hits.

Singer-songwriter and guitarist Ben Nichols is the front man for the Memphis-based alt-country band Lucero. During breaks from Lucero, Nichols began recording more acoustic-based material. This work resulted in an EP featuring a stripped-down trio of Nichols on acoustic guitar, Rick Steff of Cat Power on accordion/piano, and Todd Beene of Glossay on pedal steel/electric guitar. Entitled, The Last Pale Light in the West, the EP’s seven songs are all based on characters and situations drawn from Cormac McCarthy’s novel Blood Meridian
