Soap Scum is a two-piece garage rock band from Minneapolis, Minnesota. They share interest in bands like Sebadoh, Babes in Toyland, Ty Segall, nirvana and Guided By Voices. Lucas (guitar/vox/noise) and Laura (drums/vox) are both from southern Wisconsin. While in Wisconsin, the two were exposed to an explosion of 90s punk and grunge records being reccorded there. Both Butch Vig and Steve Albini had a monsterous influence over what was being played on the radio at the time, heavily dosing the two with music from Smashing Pumpkins, Garbage, and Nirvana.
After relocating to Minneapolis, the two would meet at a basement venue where Laura was playing. They got to talking regularly about experiences they had at recording studios in the area. While Laura and Lucas both had their hands full with recording projects, it would be a year later when Lucas would approach Laura about getting together and writing material that would become Soap Scum. From the start, the two decided that they would focus on songs that were simply structured and fun to play. When writing, Soap Scum relies on crunchy distorted guitars and dancable drums woven into dark pop vocal melodies. The songs, words, rhythm, and structure are of a beginner's mind.
