Thursday: Twinkie Jiggles Broken Orchestra | Greg Grease
This Thursday, The Twinkie Jiggles Broken Orchestra and Greg Grease will be co-headlining a show at our Turf Club. The two groups were scheduled to perform together at the release party for Twinkie Jiggles’ solo record in January but sadly Greg came down with a serious illness that kept him off that show. But now there’s another chance to catch two of the most exciting acts working in the Twin Cities today. Grease is one of the leading voices of the new generation of hip-hop artists making waves in the Twin Cities. In early August Grease cemented his role as a leader in this scene when he headlined and curated “New Space”, a Mainroom show that brought together some of the most innovative groups working today in the cities including Shiro Dame, Allan Kingdom and tiny deaths. Out of this amazing cast of players Greg Grease stands in the lead position, with a sound that consistently gets his work, including his recent Black King Cole EP, into nationally known blogs.

Friday (early): Paolo Nutini
27 year old Paolo Giovanni Nutini will be headlining a unique show in the Turf this Friday, afternoon. The show is slated for 4pm, and tickets will only be available through on-air promotions from your favorite local station, 89.3 The Current. Since online giveaway sign-ups have now closed, your only chance will be through listening to the Current giveaways, more info to be found at their website. One listen to Paolo Nutini’s magnificent third record Caustic Love reveals exactly why it will be worth it. It’s been five years since the success of its 2009 predecessor, Sunny Side Up, which like the 27-year-old Paisley-born singer’s 2006 debut, These Days, sold a staggering 1.5 million copies in the UK alone. Described by Q magazine as “a truly excellent modern soul album”, it’s a record that acknowledges the classic music of the past while still remaining solidly progressive even in 2014.

Friday (late): Hobo Nephews of Uncle Frank | Crankshaft (Solo)
Brothers Teague and Ian Alexy began playing music and writing songs together at an early age while growing up on the southern coast of New Jersey. After pursuing music separately for a few years, Teague in California and Ian in New England, the brothers came together in 2005 to form Hobo Nephews of Uncle Frank in their adopted home of northern Minnesota. Hobo Nephews began recording their first album and playing their first shows in the wintery town of Duluth, Minnesota alongside other burgeoning Americana artists Trampled By Turtles and Charlie Parr. Combining what Minneapolis Star Tribune calls “timeless songwriting chops” with “tremendously played roots music”, Hobo Nephews have played relentlessly, sang in big cities and small towns all over the country. The road tested duo has recorded LP’s and has another on the way in early 2015 produced by Trampled By Turtles violinist Ryan Young.

Saturday: Doomtree: The Last Blowout Ever! (sold out)
Minneapolis’ biggest hip-hop collective are playing one of their last Blowout shows at the venerable Turf Club! The long-awaited, long-sold out show will be the most intimate of the 6 planned (Mainroom, Varsity, Triple Rock, Icehouse) and will also be the first of their mini city tour. A group with a sound and stage presence this large, anyone with a ticket should be a very happy soul, with this group’s crushing synths, beats, and precisely-dropped lyricism from (now) local superstars POS, Dessa, Mike Mictlan, SIMS, Cecil Otter, Lazerbeak, and Paper Tiger. This will be the 10th anniversary of the Blowout, with the previous years also having sold out and proved to be one heck of a party. While the group will not be disbanding, they have expressed interest in having their last Blowout on their terms, and in the biggest way possible.
