Tuesday: HiJinx Music Festival
There will be general mayhem at the Turf tonight! No, that’s not a name of a band; although it probably is, ‘general mayhem’ is instead the phrase those at the HiJinx Music Fest use to describe their event. Among other things and certainly mayhem, it’s going to be four bands, arts, crafts, raffles, and prizes. Headlining the event will be Annie B & the Complication. Mrs. B has won several accolades in her home state of Wisconsin and will be attempting to win over Minnesota as well. Pop-punkers Popshot will also be there with Tuxedo Seagull and Ella Reid Band as well. The diversity of the music is certain entertainment for everyone, and you might walk away with a prize.

Wednesday: Ages and Ages
“Do the right thing, do it all the time,” sings Tim Perry on Ages and Ages’ second album Divisionary, which could be the premise for everything this band does. Just listening to Ages and Ages, one might think that maybe this is one of the few bands that are genuinely concerned about the moral status quo. What makes them special, however, is the fact that they don’t want you to feel bad about it. Ages and Ages is a collective of like-minded souls that believe in the power of music to change the world and elevate the spirit. These Portlandians are preaching some good feels all along their tour, and Minneapolis could use a pick-me-up every now and then, considering the state of our turbulent spring weather. Simplistic lyricism, local folkery, and orchestral compositions from We Are Willows will be opening the evening.

Thursday: The Coathangers
Part of what makes the Turf such a great club is its diversity and eclectic booking of shows. The Coathangers’ style is much different from that of the previous night’s entertainment, but they likewise put on an unforgettable performance. Their origin story is always one worth re-telling: a couple of girls wanted to hang out and play at parties, so they decided to start a band – despite having no idea how to play any instruments. Their cheeky relationship to music culture is one of their greatest assets. Check out their hilarious music video featuring wig-adorned members of Mastodon and a pony. Their vicious abuse of their instruments is coupled with spit-flurry, biting lyrics, and a loveable social disposition that makes for an excellent live show. Audacity opens and locals Kitten Forever will be there to make for an awesome bill.

Friday: Henhouse Prowlers and Horseshoes & Hand Grenades
Nine years in the making, Chicago’s Henhouse Prowlers have built a reputation for hard work and non-stop touring, playing music inspired by the roots of bluegrass while branching out into a sound uniquely their own. From lightning fast picking, to sentimental ballads—playing storied original material, traditional songs, and contemporary covers—The Prowlers’ live show leaves no one wanting. Hailing from the river town of Stevens Point, Wisconsin, HHG plays something like progressive high-energy Old-Time folk music. With deep roots in old-time bluegrass, they’ll be opening the night strong.

Saturday: Dean Wareham
Galaxy 500’s Dean Wareham is on tour with a 4-piece band (including Britta Phillips) playing songs from his new album and others from the Galaxie 500 and Luna catalog. On March 11, 2014 Dean Wareham released his first ever solo album via Double Feature (in the USA) and Sonic Cathedral (in Europe). Titled Dean Wareham, it features 9 songs produced by Jim James (My Morning Jacket), recorded at James’ house in Louisville, Kentucky.

Sunday: Cosmonauts
A stealth bomber decorates the most recent material by California droners, Cosmonauts; political statements put aside, it’s a great image. Their pop lyricism and droning style can really sneak up on the listener and make for an excellent live show that ranges from lullabyes to sharp alarms. Cosmonauts forge malcontent drone-pop melodies, delivered with a clangy laser-fuzz backbone. Formed in Summer 2009 by Alexander Ahmadi & Derek Cowart, Cosmonauts offer a glimpse of drug-addled Southern Californian rock n roll in the 21st century. Tour-mates Black Sea open.

Monday: Shakey Graves
Recently described as an “antifolk phenomenon” by NPR Music, Alejandro Rose-Garcia (aka Shakey Graves) is one of those rare artists whose music inspires the kind of obsessive devotion that compels someone to spend hours searching for more. Fans eagerly wait for the next track to surface online, erratically released from a collection of hundreds of unheard bedroom recordings and live rarities. As word of his haunting, sometime bizarre lo-fi recording style and contrastingly explosive live shows continues to spread, Shakey Graves is quickly rising from obscurity. Maybe the single most buzzed about artist in his hometown of Austin, TX, his shows there are the stuff of legend – so much so that the Mayor of Austin gave him his own local holiday. February 9 was officially proclaimed “Shakey Graves Day.” He performs live as an astonishing one man band, stomping out dusty rhythms on a hand-made kick drum built from an old suitcase on top of feverish finger picking that brings to mind Townes Van Zandt, Leo Kottke or Michael Hurley.
