ZOÉ

Fifteen years in, through constant touring and a consistently acclaimed discography, Zoé has grown to be Mexico’s biggest rock band. The group’s 2011 release Música de Fondo/MTV Unplugged (EMI) just earned double platinum certification in Mexico (120,000 albums) last Thursday, having debuted at #1 on the country’s album sales chart, held the position for ten weeks, and remaining in the top ten since then. Now Jack Daniel’s presents a highly anticipated U.S. tour by the band, beginning Saturday, July 30 at Los Angeles’ Club Nokia. The upcoming dates represent Zoé’s first tour of this country since 2009, when they performed in support of their critically lauded album Reptilectric, selling out venues from New York and Chicago to Anaheim. On that tour, Zoé recorded a set for KCRW’s influential “Morning Become Eclectic,” taped an AOL Sessions feature and performed at the legendary Amoeba Records in Hollywood. The Los Angeles Times declared “Zoé is among the most consistently intelligent and conceptually ambitious of alternative rock en español bands,” and said, “The future looks filled with possibility for this thoughtful and compelling Mexican band.”

Released in March, Zoé’s MTV Unplugged album features collaborations with legendary Spanish rocker Enrique Bunbury and with Adrian Dargelos, singer of the iconic Argentinean rock band Babasónicos. There are additional contributions the multi-instrumentalist Chetes and the indie rock band Hello Seahorse’s singer Lo Blondo, among others. The album was recorded live on October 5, 2010 at Mexico City’s Estudios Churubusco. Zoé formed in Mexico City in 1995, sharing a passion for the music of the Beatles, Placebo, The Cure and The Stone Roses. The band’s 2001 debut helped create a loyal fan base that would grow exponentially with Zoé’s 2003 album Rocanlover. The band, which has long been produced by Phil Vinall (Radiohead, Pulp), began combining acoustic melodies with electronic textures, creating music that ranged from subtle to soaring. 2006’s Memo Rex Commander y el Corazon Atómico de la Via Lactea (Memo Rex Commander and the Atomic Heart of the Milky Way) quickly went platinum, earned Zoé prominent billing at Latin music festivals including Vive Latino and Creamfields and was Zoé’s first album to be released in the U.S.
