Toby and his Train Wrecks is the result of a lot of hard drinking, a passive aggressive treatment of an acoustic guitar, and lyrics as funny as they are brutal. Sprung from the mind of singer/songwriter Toby Grace, it's a more thematic work than his various singles and former bands. Formed in 2010, TAHTW have been plugging away in the dive bars of rural Illinois, singing songs about the male-female dynamic, depression, bitterness, rejection, and alcoholism, tightly wrapped up in a sparkling Christmas wrapping of existential crisis. His voice, oft compared to such performers as Lou Reed, Mick Jagger, and Stephen Malkmus has always been the mainstay of all of his former bands and projects, and TAHTW is no different. His songs, while at times crass, revolve around a brutal stark look at life, especially when humor breaks down as a defense mechanism during those nights walking back home alone to the empty apartment. The first album of acoustic material, A Little Soft Shoe for a Lot of Hard Ladies was self-released in 2011.
