The Changeups

The Changeups are an Americana band who play country and rock but also dabble in indie, pop, blues, folk and bluegrass—no songs about baseball…yet. Alicia Kay wrote her first song and joined her first band over a dozen years ago. After two band experiences, she found she was hooked on singing and performing and started The Changeups in mid-2009 based on her songs.

She is joined by original member Jimmy Baker, long-time member Aaron Rosener and new member Jeff Ellington. Their various backgrounds as rock, country, R&B, folk, rockabilly and punk musicians make for a distinct sound changing the song style throughout a performance. Alicia’s emotional lyrics and twangy heartfelt singing trickled in with Jimmy’s fun pop songs charm any audience.

The Changeups released their first recording, an EP, Negative Space, in January 2014, with a release show at Lee’s Liquor Lounge in Minneapolis, MN, where they are based. They released their first full-length album, Unhinge the Moon, in December 2017, and had a release show at Bunkers. They have also played other venues including The Varsity Theater, Turf Club, Amsterdam Bar & Hall, Kitty Cat Klub, Aster Café, the Fine Line and the 331 Club.

They have played with artists such as Jillian Rae, Courtney Yasmineh, Christine Hoberg, Katy Vernon, Nathan Miller & Unstoppable Co., Courtney McClean & The Dirty Curls, The Union Suits, Bethany Larson & The Bee’s Knees, Liminal Phase, Jennifer Markey, Elizabeth Ghandour and Matt Jennings.
