Steve Kaul & The Brass Kings play their old-time instruments in very unexpected ways. With metal-bodied resophonic guitars, washtub bass & washboard they chart the Bermuda Triangle of old-time, middle-eastern and bluegrass music. Shifting from jug-band chugging into wild improvisational ragas they blend folk music traditions into a pulsing groove.
They have been a support act for David Lindley, Trampled By Turtles, Hackensaw Boys, Blueground Undergrass, Greensky Bluegrass, The Crooked Jades, Daisy Mayhem, Boiled In Lead, The Wayword Sons and Hillstomp.
Fairs and Festivals include The Minnesota State Fair, Rock Bend Folk Festival, Unvarnished Music Festival, Boats & Bluegrass Festival, North Versus South Festival, Santa Anna Hill County Blues Festival, Famous Dave's Blues Festival, Kandiyohi County Fair, Jackson Music Festival, Logjam Music Festival, New London Spicer Folk Festival, Riversong Festival, Dakota County Fair & Chippewa County Fair. The band performed at the Fitzgerald Theater on the farewell broadcast of MPR's The Morning Show. Other performers included Greg Brown, Peter Ostrushko, The Steele Singers, Peter Mayer, Prudence Johnson, Neal & Leandra, Jerry Rau, Dan Newton and Ann Reed.
Their debut cd The Brass Kings made several top ten list of best cd's of 2006. Their next cd, Washboard Rope Guitar, made the Minneapolis Star Tribune top 10 list in 2008, and their latest release, Live Humdinger, went multi anodized-aluminum.
