Phabo is R&B's new North Star and musically, Phabo is modernizing the best parts of what we know as R&B.
Born in San Diego, where his parents gifted him with a red drum set, he moved to St. Petersburg, Florida by the time he was eight, then relocated to Long Beach, California at 16. Cycling through drum, piano, and guitar lessons, he eventually found a musical home in his school's jazz band, playing the clarinet.
Phabo released his debut album Soulquarius in July 2021. The full-length, released on Soulection, included guest appearances from Alex Vaughn, Destin Conrad, Mntra, and Rexx Life Raj. It would later be celebrated at year-end, making many R&B tastemakers' coveted best R&B albums lists. Soulquarius harks back to the pioneering classic soul and R&B sounds of artists like D'Angelo and Erykah Badu and Jahiem drawing influences from the rotating collective of experimental Black music artists in the late '90s and early '00s while also incorporating contemporary R&B.
Since then, Phabo has joined Duckwrth and Eric Bellinger on their different projects. He co-wrote two songs on Kehlani's recent album, Blue Water Road, and has released a new EP, Before I Let Her Go. “SCORPIO MOON” is his latest single after finishing up the How’s My Driving Tour, which included SOLD OUT dates in DC, TORONTO, NYC, ATL, LA, and London.
