Nelson Devereaux

Nelson Devereaux is a recording artist, composer, teacher, arranger, and woodwind player living in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Milwaukee-native Devereaux started playing alto saxophone at 8 years old, studying with Berkeley Fudge at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music. When he was 18, he moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota and studied saxophone Eugene Rousseau at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.

Upon finishing his degrees in Music Education and Saxophone Performance, Nelson began extensive touring around the US and Europe with Har Mar Superstar and recording, arranging, and touring with the indie-rock band Bon Iver.

Nelson has since played some of the biggest venues and music festivals in the world: Coachella (’17-’18), The Hollywood Bowl, Primavera Barcelona (’15,’16), Hammerstein Ballroom, Copley Symphony Hall, Merriweather Post Pavilion and many more around the United States, Europe, and Canada.

In 2019, Nelson joined and toured the US and Europe with Craig Finn (The Hold Steady) and the Uptown Controllers, playing Clarinet, Tenor Saxophone, and Flute and supporting vocals.

An avid recording artist, Nelson has also completed recording work with bands such as Poliça, Lizzo, Mark Mallman, Paul Cherry, The Mild High Club, Suko Pyramid, Max Devereaux, Klassik, and many more!

As a teacher, Nelson has taught privately since high school, when his band directors allowed him to instruct a jazz combo zero hour class. Nelson has been teaching saxophone, flute, and clarinet at Twin Town Guitars since 2012 and has been on judging panels for jazz education in Iowa and Minnesota. He specializes in individual study, where lessons span classical and jazz, and has helped students prep for auditions and gain entrance to the Greater Twin Cities Youth Symphony, Minnesota Youth Jazz Band, Minnesota Junior Winds, as well as college auditions!

In 2020, Nelson became a SYOS Mouthpieces (Paris, France) endorsed artist on saxophone and clarinet. Nelson’s latest record releases, BAD WATER and 2 (CATSAX) are available on Bandcamp and on other streaming platforms. He is left-handed.
