Natalia Kills

- Working script -

The air is electric with the whispers of assistant engineers and their hard drives humming… It’s Friday at the studio and runners dart from room to room preparing for the arrival of a new artist: singer, songwriter, scriptwriter and movie producer Natalia Kills. Two security guards hover like dark statues at either side of the entrance and nod in unison.

Suddenly the glass doors slide open. A cloaked young woman dressed in black and gold enters. She offsets a relaxed elegance with sharp glances that, in two moments, survey the entire room. Natalia Kills is here. She enters the vocal booth and adjusts the microphone with one leather gloved hand. Her other caresses the lyric sheet on the music stand as she examines the lines she’s written. After a brief pause, she makes up her mind and kicks the door shut with her sky scraper stiletto. Will.i.am sits behind the mixing desk rapidly clicking buttons.

Natalia: Can you turn it up, Will? I wanna feel it.

Will.i.am: Sure thing Ms. Kills … loud enough?

Natalia: Perfect. I wanna make this one dark… something we could use for the kidnap.

Will.i.am: Kidnap?

Natalia: In my film “The Exhibition”… remember? I’m sound tracking the whole thing with my album … at the same time, shooting a film to my album. One and the same. Let’s do this!

Will hits play and the music begins, loud and menacing. Her album ‘Perfectionist’ is almost complete, and this is exactly the song she’s been looking for to finish the score. The music roars in the headphones as she sings with full voice – embarking on an audio cinematic journey on the quest for the ideal. Over hybrid of hard hitting beats and 90′s movie soundtrack nostalgia, she drills through the wall between reality and desire.

Natalia: It’s 5.30. Will, I gotta go – let’s finish this last part later. I’ll be back tonight.

Will.i.am: You got another shoot?

Natalia: No. A meeting with Martin at Cherrytree HQ. See you tonight.

She quickly gathers her things – and in a breath, glides out the door.

Natalia enters the Cherrytree offices, fondly thinking back to the day she was brought on board – a co-signing to Will I Am Records and Cherrytree. Natalia greets company staffers Andrea and Scott in her soft British accent. Martin, aka producer “Cherry Cherry Boom Boom,” is on the phone:

Martin (Cherrytree Records): …I know, but if you thought the “Zombie” video was hot wait til you see the first single!… and she writes and directs her own stuff… yeah I met her a while ago, and then Will brought her over from London… she’s half Jamaican, half South American, crazy, right? And! She just walked in – I’ll call you back… ok bye.

He puts the phone down and smiles.

Martin: Nice shoes… can I tweet them?

Natalia: Have I ever said no?

Martin: Dressed to Kill every time ha ha! I’m just about done mixing the last song we did together – sounds hot. Kate Bush meets Grace Jones at La Femme Nikita’s apartment. Did you decide what poem you’re gonna read next on Cherrytree radio? You brought The Raven to life.

Natalia: I thought about an extract from Macbeth… Lady Macbeth was quite a heroine… But before I go on, did I tell you that my film is almost finished? One more song to go!

Martin: Great! It’s perfect. A debut album with a debut film. Together.

Andrea: Hey, Natalia, what was it that inspired you to write and produce the film?

Natalia: I wanted to describe and express myself musically as well as visually. To show who I am and what inspires me. I love silent movies from the 20′s. I wanted my film to be in the classic film noir style and tie in my album concept of “Perfectionist”… so I used mannequins to represent the perfection I aspire to have.”

Scott: [laughing] Mannequins? Creepy.

Andrea: And perfect?

Natalia: That’s the point. Everyone wants something in their life to be a little bit more ideal. Self improvement is a natural desire for all human beings. We’re all perfectionists in some way…

Martin: Wow. Remind me not to make a mistake around you. Hey, but we’re launching a record too. 2010! So when somebody asks you ‘Who is Natalia Kills?’ What are you gonna tell ‘em?

Natalia: I am Natalia Kills… and you better be ready for me.
