Sour-sweet hooks and explosive emotion are at the core of N3WYRKLA’s artistic inspiration. Born Nyla Nasir in 2003 to Philadelphia rapper Gillie Da Kid, the singer and songwriter grew up immersed in the city’s rich musical culture of hip-hop, R&B, and soul. Her first steps in music were as an MC herself; however, time in New Jersey exposed her to the wealth of punk and emo the state has to offer, and raw, underground rock music became a part of her musical fingerprint. She emerged as a fully formed artist in 2023 with the single “care about myself” and SELFishly enTITLED, an EP of songs chronicling the complexities of relationships and young womanhood with bracing honesty. With her 2024 EP, it’s not you, it’s me, she achieves a synthesis of her influences so complete and original that it feels less like a fusion and more like a new invention.
