My Son the Hurricane

Hailing from Niagara/Toronto, the perennial festival closers and dance floor inciters mix New Orleans style grooves with funk, jazz and hip hop. My Son the Hurricane has “stood out like a sore, yet extremely talented thumb at every show they’ve played” (Pulse Niagara), and become revered for their live performances.

Ontario-based brasshop collective My Son the Hurricane released their latest album, Ride The Bullet, on April 12, 2019. The new album was recorded at Jukasa Media by engineers Darren Magierowski and Jill Zimmermann (July Talk, Alexisonfire). The multi horn, multi drummer, multi singer brass beast My Son the Hurricane is excited to return with a new album Ride the Bullet. The full length release “Finally matches the intensity of the full throttle live show” says band leader Danno O’Shea and is the first album to feature vocalist Sylvie Kindree in its entirety since her entry in mid 2016.

The band has had a staggering number of North American tour dates in the last two years and used that time to hone a set of diverse and energetic songs. Vocalist Jacob Bergsma has brought down his patented high pitch vocal for a (mostly) more mellow and serious tone while the group employed even more musicians (strings, keys and a guest vocal appearance from Darren “Mista D” Dumas from The Salads) to its already giant roster that fluctuates between 10-13 people and features a touring lineup of 2 trumpets, trombone, Bari and tenor sax, percussion as well as the usual array of rhythm section instruments.

Songs like “Parade” kick into a familiar dance feel and launch into an anthemic chorus with Kindree singing “This is our parade, it will not be delayed” and at this raucous pace it’s hard not to agree. While “Hollywood” follows the band through uncharted territory displaying strings, piano and the regret of early passing. The song “ Casserole” is a well honed live tune where Jacob Bergsma stretches out his comedic delivery the most on what has been a more serious release for him.

Ride the Bullet isn’t a departure, just a fine tuning of a sound the band started years ago when they began in a small apartment in St. Catharines, Ontario. The brass-hop funk crew will tour more than 75 dates in 2019 over North America.
