In the music world where friendships fade like one-hit-wonders emerges Motel Breakfast. These Midwest misfits navigate adulthood through emotional anthems somewhere between Hot Mulligan, Dr. Dog, and Bruce Springsteen. Led by vocalist/guitarist Jimmy Drenovsky, alongside guitarist Mick O’Donnell, Conor Brennan’s keys, Drue deVente’s bass, and Jesse Nasadowski’s drumming, they seamlessly blend the gravity and playfulness of life.
Their sophomore album, I Promise I’m Having Fun., expands the boundaries of what Motel Breakfast sounds like. The album merges their wide range of inspirations while chronicling their equally wide range of experiences in their twenties. Emo-tinged rock songs sit alongside introspective ballads. Bouncy new-wave guitar riffs are paired with rumbling synths and Springsteen-esque vocals. All 5 band members contribute to the songwriting here, making for a project large in scope that showcases the group’s eagerness to follow wherever inspiration leads.
It took 3 years to make their sophomore record, but the resulting album showcases a band finally hitting their stride, getting out of their own way, and letting creativity take center stage.
