Minneapolis’ musician Jason Edmonds started self-releasing music as the Magic Castles in the late aughts, and has since refined his dreamy take on psychedelic music, creating a lush Byrdsian soundscape that has grown more clear and direct over time.
Anton Newcombe of The Brian Jonestown Massacre heard the song “Ballad of the Golden Bird” in 2010 and sought out the band, and in 2012 started releasing the Magic Castles’ albums on his label “A” Recordings LTD. The Magic Castles toured the east coast US with The Brian Jonestown Massacre in 2012. In 2013-14, the band crisscrossed the US several times, and in 2015 the Castles traveled abroad for a tour of Europe and UK.
In 2019, during a hiatus period for the band, Edmonds was seriously injured in a car accident, which triggered an outpouring of support from the arts community in Minneapolis, and fans of the band abroad, to help pay for his medical bill while he recovered his health.
The album Sun Reign was released in May of 2021, the band’s fourth release for ‘A’ Records Ltd. The first pressing on gold vinyl quickly sold out, and the single “Lost Dimension” was featured in a season 3 episode of the Emmy award-winning HBO series Succession in November 2021.
The Magic Castles made a return to stage in 2021 & 2022 as venues began to open again, with new guitarist Izaak Drew and bassist Kristof Marden joining Edmonds and drummer Adam Patterson, refreshing the band's live sound.
In 2022 The Magic Castles opened for The Brian Jonestown Massacre for ten dates of their 2022 US tour, as well as a run with The Warlocks through the Midwest before heading into the Pachyderm Studios to work on their next album, and perform around Minneapolis.
