Lucy Bedroque

Lucy Bedroque (they/he) lived in the Bronx till they were nine but came to life in Los Angeles. COVID hit when they were in eighth grade, and with the lockdown came the freedom to explore their fixations without distraction. They’d been making music since before they hit adolescence, but now they could lock in, developing a sound that exists in a post-postmodern hellscape where rage rap, digicore, and indietronica are stuffed into a particle accelerator and reassembled in the 20-year-old artist’s crooked image.

Bedroque’s primary SoundCloud page goes all the way back to 2020, but they emerged in earnest from the shadowy sectors of the online underground in 2023 with the release of their breakout mixtape SISTERHOOD, then under the alias lostrushi, followed one year later by Fête de la Vanille. Both projects found them combining the best elements of the hyperpop zeitgeist with less obvious influences such as Stereolab, Radiohead, and Deftones. It also mined inspirations outside the music world—anime, vintage video games, the ruins of Web 1.0, and more.

In addition to the sonic boom they sent rippling across the tapped-in music scene, these records also established a singular visual aesthetic. SISTERHOOD’s cover is peppered with half-finished manga sketches and Japanese calligraphy and features the word GLUTMOTHER in place of the album title, referencing the obscure, hyperactive niche of the internet in which they operated. "The role of motherhood is representative of a superiority to everything around it," Bedroque explains. "But beyond humans, it's a reference to mother nature and creation."

Unmusique, Bedroque’s most ambitious and adventurous project to date, arrived in May of 2025, amid a run of shows with Jane Remover, the digicore pioneer who shares their omnivorous taste for all things rap, pop, rock, electronica, and beyond. Self-produced and stacked with credits from the likes of SKAI (Playboi Carti, Osamason) and Cranes (fakemink, Nettspend), the 17-track juggernaut features songs like “G6 Anthem,” “2010 Justin Bieber,” “Ultraviolet,” and “Yes You May,” shotgun blasts of pixelated hardcore hip-hop hurdling through concrete walls of sound. Unmusique’s motion carried Bedroque on a largely sold-out U.S. tour and an unforgettable set at Rolling Loud this summer.

Bedroque’s new mixtape c, out September 18 via deadAir, pushes their sound to a new plane, far above the level other artists occupy. Inspired by Visual Kei—a Japanese fashion and music subculture that incorporates elements of glam, metal, punk, and goth—and left-field horror films like Nobuhiko Obayashi’s 1997 cult classic Hausu (House), c finds the artist exploring their fascination with extremity, reaching into dark, twisted territory that had previously lurked beyond the horizon of their consciousness.

This tectonic shift is evident in the “SPEED DEMON” video, in which two women in kumadori facepaint and frilly victorian dresses (one white, one black) dance around Bedroque as he shout-croons in a flow state of complete confidence and freedom, staring directly at the camera.

This uninhibited mindstate is evident on wax as well: Throughout c, Bedoroque leans harder than ever into their unique style as a vocalist, allowing other esteemed artists to cover production duties at times so their voice can stand center stage.

c is a testament to Lucy Bedroque’s love of deep cuts, obscure sounds and visuals only a true obsessive could dig up. The flier for his forthcoming “003 Tour” references an alternate DVD cover for Hausu. And embedded into standout track “STONE IN FOCUS” is an Aphex Twin sample, cleared by the reclusive British legend himself.

But this record is much more than a curiosity cabinet. Across 15 tracks that unfold over the course of 37 minutes, it’s a jagged mountain ridge with brutal climbs, steep drops, and breathtaking scenery. “c is a rager album," Bedroque says. "It's supposed to be dark, a little fucked up, and feel like a psychedelic experience...”
