INTERCOURSE is the avant-sleaze, electro-industrial duo of Clark Ruhff and Dick W., haunting the Minneapolis DIY underground since 2016. Meticulous aesthetic research and dedicated creative alchemy yield a disparate and altogether unhinged maelstrom of sonic and literary influences. Sound sources plundered from camp-horror film scores, 20th-century avant-garde masters, 19th-century operas, and Mortal Combat are backed by distorted 808 kicks and bluntly executed synthesizer sequences; all take a heavy bruising from searing tape-and-feedback noise electronics. This is the backdrop to competitive, dueling vocals with which Dick and Clark deliver their obsessively composed lyrics in seething rants, gasps, and tormented threats. Figures like John Giorno, Derek Jarman’s Caravaggio, Paul Cadmus, Marcel Marceau, Andrea Dworkin, and James Jesus Angleton are enrolled into this cabaret as spectral fools, forced to posthumously enact a humiliating animus of frustration, melancholy and longing, eternally and fatally collapsing the boundaries of self and desire.
With aggressive sincerity and uncomfortable precision, INTERCOURSE posits that the dancefloor, the screen, the erotic embrace and the grave are indistinguishable and undifferentiated sites of horrendous, divine encounter.
