At only 21 years of age, award winning, critically acclaimed singer songwriter Brighid Fry (they/she) who performs as Housewife is already a veteran of the Canadian Music Industry. An alum of Girls Rock Camp Toronto, Fry released her first EPs before entering her teens and landed gigs on stage with Feist, The Sadies, and Whitehorse and on the lineups for dozens of festivals including Field Trip, Pride, and Dundas West Fest. While still in middle school, she appeared on the cover of the Arts section of the Globe and Mail and Toronto Star where she was dubbed Toronto’s Tween Queen of Rock. As a young teen, she founded the upstart Indie Folk duo Moscow Apartment who stormed the Canadian Music Scene with awards, rapturous praise and a global record deal the week before Fry graduated from High School.
A name change (Moscow Apartment became Housewife in the Spring of 2022), a lineup change (Housewife became a solo project in the Fall of 2022) and a label change (Hazel Street shut down in the summer of 2023) see Housewife (Fry) putting new music out as an independent artist in 2024. Despite these big transformations and challenges, the music and live shows are only getting better after two recent electrifying sets at UK’s The Great Escape: world class.
Fry’s songwriting is maturing as the collaborates with industry mainstays like producer and multi-instrumentalist Gabe Simon (Lana Del Rey, Dua Lipa, Anderson .Paak), writer/ producer Carrie K (PVRIS, The Regrettes), performer/producer Mikky Ekko (Rihanna, Vince Staples, Diplo), in-demand writer/ producer Derek Hoffman (Arkells, Ralph, The Trews) and dozens of others.
2023 started with a North American tour supporting Paolo Nutini and releasing singles that drew praise from Rolling Stone France, Slate Magazine and breaking into the CBC top 20 and closed with Housewife touring the U.S supporting Addison Grace, winning the prestigious SOCAN Foundation Awards for Young Canadian Songwriters, sponsored by SiriusXM and landing on a number of best songs of 2023 lists, most notably the top 25 songs of the year list compiled each year by DC Studios CEO James Gunn (famed for his soundtrack work with the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise). 2024 has seen Housewife release her first singles as an indie artist and showcasing at New Colossus, SXSW, and The Great Escape. With nearly 4 million streams on Spotify alone, Housewife is poised to make some major breakthroughs in 2024.
In addition to growing up in a multi generational queer family of witches and being a loud and proud member of the 2SLGBTQ+ community herself, Brighid is also a climate activist and champion of the environmental organizations Music Declares Emergency (she helped to Co-found the Canadian chapter) and Earth Percent. With millions of streams and choice placements on Editorial playlists, including several covers, previous releases were named “22 Albums You Need to Hear” by CBC, the top 25 EPs of 2020 (Exclaim) and 2022 (The Revue) and nominated for an Indies award (2021). Brighid has also won a Canadian Folk Music Award, a Toronto Independent Music Award, the Canadian Songwriting Competition and the Slaight Music It’s Your Shot award. In 2023, she was named one of Canada’s top 25 environmentalists under 25 by Starfish and a 30 Under 30 Youth Leader in Climate Action by Corporate Knights.
