Now although he hails from Minnesota, Randy ”DJ QD” McGraw is far from a tourist in the Austin, Texas night scene. This Irishman has been DJing in Austin for over 9 years back when he was spinning hiphop at the Ritz (now the Ritz Drafthouse). Jumping from venue to venue (as Austin DJ’s naturally do) Randy found himself playing the typical dirty 6th St bars at Emos Lounge, Bourban Rocks, Soho, Chuggin Monkey and more. Looking back Randy comments, “it was a lot of top 40 tracks back then, I had a playlist of sorts in which I had to play, with little to no hiphop”. A far cry from where he is now, playing an open format of music ranging from hiphop to dance at clubs ranging from J Blacks to Barcelona.

Now the fact that he jumps from club to club its only natural that he has to deal with different types of crowds and customers on a nightly basis and thats where the fun comes in. From the bitchy drunken girls repeatedly telling him to play certain song to the mean muggin drunken fellows who demand him to play a certain song, Randy deals with them all. “I literally stopped the music one night when a certain individual was asking for requests. The fact that he was the venue owner didn’t stop me from telling him I was an experienced DJ and I know what to do and play.” While not out DJ’ng the nights you can find Randy managing everybody’s favorite local dive bar Dirty Bills where he continues to DJ First Thursdays with special guests and his loyal partner, Kid Slyce. The two went on to form the combo known as The Get Right Kids back in 2008. “I moved into some apartments in 2008 and I heard my downstairs neighbor going through a scratch routine. So I went downstairs and introduced myself.” [Mischief, November 2011]
