The trio of University of Minnesota students that is Dial Tone embodies the DIY ethos of the Minneapolis underground scene. Within a year of existence, the group recorded, produced, and released a full-length concept album aurally tracing the evolution of underground music in the Twin Cities, all from their bedroom studio in Marcy Holmes, Minneapolis. Dial Tone has consistently defied categorization, evident in their debut self-titled album (which spans alt-rock/punk to indie pop).
With their upcoming release, they have once more demonstrated their capacity for musical range. Dial Tone's latest project was completed fully DIY while each member was on a different continent, and includes stripped-down reimaginings of three songs off their debut record and a cover of Hippo Campus' "Suicide Saturday," live-recorded at The Fine Line during their last show before going abroad. The Time For A Living EP takes listeners into Dial Tone's songwriting and ideating process and demonstrates Dial Tone's capacity for musical range and commitment to creating authentic, original music, even with oceans and mountain ranges in the way. Dial Tone has every intention of continuing to explore new genres, topics, and ways of engaging in and supporting the independent DIY Twin Cities scene and zero intention of becoming any more categorizable beyond that.
