Danny Brown's fifth studio LP uknowhatimsayin¿ drops at an intriguing point in the rapper's career. After breaking out with his second album XXX, consolidating fame with the follow-up Old, and then blowing the game wide open through 2016's landmark Atrocity Exhibition, Brown's status as king of the underground feels assured these days.
In a press release, Danny Brown said, “This is my version of a stand-up comedy album.” He continued, “Most of my close friends now aren’t rappers—they’re comedians and actors. So I wanted to create something that mixed humor with music. Something that was funny but not parody.”
Q-Tip executive produced uknowhatimsayin¿ “There was no room for error,” Brown said. “Q-Tip wanted me to go back to that ‘Greatest Rapper Ever’ era. I almost had to relearn how to rap again—an ego death type thing. He gave me this whole new outlook on music. I can't go back to how I was before.” Other producers on uknowhatimsayin¿ (out October 4, 2019) include Paul White, Flying Lotus, Standing on the Corner, and JPEGMAFIA. There are also guest spots from Run the Jewels, JPEGMAFIA, Blood Orange, and Obongjayar.
