Counterfeit Madison

I’m Sharon Udoh, a Nigerian-American pianist, improviser, arranger, curator, and composer based in Chicago, who sometimes performs under the name Counterfeit Madison. My work combines a voice that seemingly erupts from the center of the earth with a stage presence that somehow feels both dangerous and kind. My collaborators have included clipping., Tune-Yards, Los Angeles Gay Men's Chorus, Ben Lamar Gay, Dr. Adam Zanolini, and Angel Bat Dawid. My performances have been described as a warm bowl of soup, a tornado, a jalapeño pepper, a Jackson Pollock painting, a bulldozer, and magnetic. Long after I left the church of my youth, music has become a place of worship, and has been my salvation many times over.
