For nearly a decade, KFAI’s MinneCulture project has broadcast concerts featuring Minnesota musicians. The Live from Minnesota Mixtape cassette tape represents all-star selections from these sets with acts like Chastity Brown, Charlie Parr, Kitten Forever, The Jayhawks, The Suburbs, Dalmar Yare, Heiruspecs and more.
KFAI will present a release show at Turf Club on December 15, 2018. The line-up features artists included on the Mixtape release such as Minneapolis Synth-pop band Pornonono, gospel-soul singer and local Black Lives Matter anthem author Jayanthi Kyle (formerly of Gospel Machine), MC-poet See More Perspective, and others to be announced.
These historic recordings capture various stages of growth among Minnesota acts. Collectively, the Mixtape serves as a time capsule of Minnesota music spanning 2010-2017. Many acts on the Mixtape have since shifted directions, like Caroline Smith (now known as Your Smith), while others, like Gospel Machine, have dissipated altogether. The Mixtape is only available on cassette at selected Twin Cities record stores and on MinneCulture’s SoundCloud page.
“For 40 years, KFAI has been about two things: music and the counterculture. So when it came time to celebrate our Live from Minnesota series, we ignored the predictable: vinyl and online. Nope, we’re going boom box,” says Todd Melby, KFAI’s MinneCulture managing editor. “The Live from Minnesota Mixtape is on cassette because it’s cool, tactile and affordable.”
Tapes will sell for $5 at local record stores. All proceeds to benefit KFAI.
“We have our love of folk music because of accessibility. It’s our music and KFAI feels like our radio station,” Parr says about the eclectic Minneapolis station. “That’s what I love about KFAI.” The Mixtape includes Parr’s song “Falcon,” recorded at the Paramount Theatre before his hometown in Austin, Minnesota.
KFAI’s MinneCulture stories and concerts highlight Minnesota’s art and cultural heritage. Tune in at their SoundCloud page and on KFAI at 7pm every Wednesday. KFAI’s MinneCulture is made possible by a grant from the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
Jayanthi specializes in entrances & departures. Her anthem “Hand in Hand” has become a standard w/the Movement for Black Lives. She is a gifted messenger.
