Who says rock music is dead? It should come as no surprise to anyone who listened to their 2012 album Strange Land that Yellow Ostrich are making some of the more exciting music in the genre these days. If the grinding guitar riff on “Any Wonder,” the second single from their upcoming LP, Cosmos (out February 25 on Barsuk), isn’t enough to suck you in, then Alex Schaaf’s soaring vocals will probably do it. As the title of the album, lifted from Carl Sagan’s ’80s PBS series, indicates, the band is taking on slightly headier themes with Cosmos, but their rich, layered music remains as grounded as ever.
