Restless Natives

Restless Natives is a collaboration between Chicago natives, Samone Roberts and Nathan Drew Larsen. Samone and Nathan came up from the same house music roots in the early 90’s. Nathan has produced under his own name and his House of Black Dress pseudonym for a decade while running Fresh Meat Records with Mazi (Audio Soul Project). Samone has been DJing for over a decade as well, and formerly producing as one-half of the group Interrobang. Chicago is known for house music, but its artists tend to work in quiet isolation. Samone and Nathan came together in the Summer of 2010 to break this mold and infuse their love of house, disco and machine music with the spirit of a collaboration. They DJ together regularly at such parties as Justin Long’s infamous all vinyl monthly at Smart Bar and are known for their mid-tempo emotional dance floor sound, which borrows heavily from early deep house, disco and other Proto-house music including Italo, NY Electo, and Post-punk/Industrial. All of this influence is evident in their production.

Samone Roberts (formerly DJ SR-71) has been rescuing dance floors from monotony and mediocrity with a style born from the days before disco died. As a child raised on the South Side of Chicago, she spent countless weekends skating at the roller rink, dancing to her mother’s disco collection, and listening to WBMX. With synthesized music being a strong influence at such a young age, it's no surprise her first cassette tape was the Soundtrack to Cat People produced by Giorgio Morodor. As a DJ, her style encompasses a variety of styles ranging from Disco, Classics, and grooving Edits to four on the floor percussion driven House. Samone has orchestrated sets behind the decks at some of Chicago’s most notorious venues, including numerous appearances at the legendary Smart Bar. Her excellent programming abilities, layered with a decade of experience enables Samone to bring the obscure to the forefront and the inspiration to the dance floor. Samone is a vocalist, songwriter and producer currently working out of her Chicago studio. She has releases under the name Interrobang on Chicago's Kompute Musik, and with Nathan Drew Larsen of the Restless Natives on Fresh Meat Records.

Nathan Drew Larsen came-up through the Chicago loft party and warehouse scene in the mid-nighties. His music is influenced by the deep house of the time, including his work with hardware synths. His use of field recordings and effects draw from disparate forms such as motoric and psychedelica. Nathan started releasing his original music in 2000 and since then his songs and remixes have appeared on Fresh Meat Records, NRK, 20:20 Vision, Renaissance, Global Underground, Airtight, Cyclo, and Underl_ne, among other labels. His debut release on Mazi's Gourmet Recordings, "Standing Still," featuring the vocals of Black Pearl, is considered to be a Chicago house classic. Nathan and Mazi currently run Fresh Meat Records. Nathan's plays live with Mazi's Audio Soul Project and records and djs with Chicago's Samone Roberts as Restless Natives.
