MR. FREE & THE SATELLITE FREAKOUT!

Zappa, Devo and Oingo Boingo meet MC5 fronted by a younger Les Savy Fav’s Tim Harrington at the circus- that sort of comes close to describing Tucson’s Mr. Free & the Satellite Freakout, a band whose live performances never fail to astound. Those performances would account for the legions of devotees at home or on the road in their black, vegetable oil powered bus (also a venue on wheels). It would also account for the flood of crowds, praise and press their shows have received, such as their main stage performance at 2008’s massive Mess with Texas event in Waterloo Park during SXSW, which had them sharing the stage with the likes of X, The Breeders and No Age and their now legendary “bus shows” in LA, Austin and elsewhere.

There is a Mr. Free and he is not just a singer - he’s a performer. With bizarro makeup, costumes that feature everything from loincloths to aprons, this group doesn’t just play... they put on a show. The performance would be enough in itself, but then there’s the music- dense, dark, whimsical and everything in between, MFSF manages to create music that is both complex and hook-filled. It’s not surprising, considering the band includes Miles Bartlett and Nick Letson, both formerly of The Mean Reds (Record Collection). MFSF’s new album Guru Gaga is out on Bloat Records (home to acts like Bob Log III, Bebe & Serge and Pork Torta) and was described by the Tucson Weekly as “being brilliant both in composition and execution.”
