[Pitchfork, 9/24/14] Earlier this year, L.A. garage band Cherry Glazerr released their Burger debut, Haxel Princess, oozing honeyed songs about crushes, cry-babies, and the perfect grilled cheese. The band’s groovy new 7″, “Had Ten Dollaz”, sheds none of the reverb, but finds the trio flexing their more vicious side. The song was handpicked by the designer Hedi Slimane to soundtrack Saint Laurent’s fall 2014 runway show, which is fitting. “Had Ten Dollaz” struts with confidence and effortless cool.
But here, lead vocalist and guitarist Clementine Creevy one-ups her oppressors with a knowing yowl and scuzzy throttle: “I know that you notice my ways/ And I feel, I feel your gaze,” while Hannah Uribe shatters the drums and Sean Redman throbs along on bass. Given that two-thirds of Cherry Glazerr is still in high school, they’re often pegged as a young band, but they aren’t kidding around with smart social commentary channeled through pop-laced punk shredders. “Had Ten Dollaz” is further proof that what makes Cherry Glazerr songs sweet isn’t so much sugar, but the hint of venom.
