Alex Lilly (Obi Best, Touché, Zero Dezire and The Living Sisters) wants to help you dance through your existential crisis. You may have spotted the Los Angeles-based songwriter/producer/mentalist touring in Beck’s band or on the road with the Bird and the Bee and Lorde. Now she’s synthesizing her musical powers into 2% Milk (2019), her debut full-length album.
Lilly’s songs – she describes the sound as “sexy psychological thriller” – are bright, gloriously Byzantine celebrations and critiques of modern life. With Lilly’s virtuosic vocals and sharp wit at the helm, this is toe-tapping, brain-mapping pop at its finest. The album’s title track “2% Milk,” was adapted by Lilly from a poem by Jacqueline Suskind, an LA poet who improvises free verse for strangers. The record includes contributions by Jacob Bercovici (of The Voidz), Andy Bauer (of Twin Shadow), and LA electronic pioneer Daedelus.
