Chloe George wants to feel everything. And, when you listen to her songs, she wants you to feel everything too. The Bay Area-born, Los Angeles-based performer and songwriter makes earnest, rhythmic pop songs that are undefinable in style but entirely unified in their mission to plumb the deepest depths of the human heart: she values the emotive core of a song above all else, putting her in a lineage of greats as well as a new class of pop’s rulebreakers. On her debut singles, 2021’s “Peachi” and “The Door”, Chloe braided the organic fluidity of R&B with the clear-eyed intensity of golden-era pop, heralding her arrival as an effusive young star.

Born to a music teacher mother and a drummer father, and raised in a household with three musical-theater-loving older siblings, Chloe was brought up around music, and felt a connection to the classics from an early age. Upon hearing Ella Fitzgerald for the first time, she felt an immediate connection with the voice not just as an instrument, but as a tool of pure communion.

Her first solo release, the viral TikTok hit “ghost town (voice memo)”, is a testament to that belief in the voice as a miraculous vessel; it transforms Kanye West’s “Ghost Town” into an otherworldly, lost-to-time ballad, and has been streamed over 100 million times.

In the years since graduating from NYU’s Clive Davis Institute, Chloe has quickly become a sought after songwriter, frequently co-writing with artists such as Normani and Dua Lipa. But it’s her most recent project, PENNY, that most clearly speaks to where she is now. Named for the coin-like duality of new love — the way its joys can so easily give way to the fear of surrendering to it — PENNY is Chloe shining at her brightest, taking her vivid lyricism and using it to illustrate the light and shade of modern romance. Produced with Jason Suwito, Rob Bisel, and Yakob, it’s an EP that takes the affecting warmth of Chloe’s early singles and adds booming, Tame Impala-like drum beats and snatches of vocoder, threadbare piano, and glittering, overdriven synths. For Chloe herself, PENNY was the EP that taught her about the value of patience and of imperfection, and of interrogating even the most uncomfortable feelings, in the name of art. For us, it’s a perfect summation of one of alternative pop’s most dynamic new diarists — an artist who’s only just beginning to show what she’s capable of.
