Keith Ellison has served as attorney general since Minnesotans first elected him in 2018. As the People’s Lawyer, Keith’s job is to help Minnesotans afford their lives and live with dignity, safety, and respect.
Under Keith’s leadership, the Attorney General’s office has taken on the powerful on behalf of Minnesotans, lowering costs for Minnesotans by reducing the cost of insulin to $35, fighting price-gouging by greedy corporations, tackling medical debt, and holding opioid companies accountable for the deadly opioid epidemic. He is protecting tenants from exploitation, keeping Minnesotans safe from scammers and abuse, standing up for student borrowers, and holding greedy corporations accountable for screwing over Minnesotans.
Keith is leading in the fight against the Trump Administration, because no one is above the law — even the President. He is fighting to defend our freedoms, protecting reproductive rights and access to gender-affirming care, organizing to restore the right to vote for 55,000 Minnesotans returning home from incarceration, and standing up for our trans neighbors.
As Attorney General, Keith led the prosecution that successfully convicted former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin for the death of George Floyd.
Before becoming attorney general, Keith represented Minnesotans in the U.S. House of Representatives for 12 years, during which he championed consumer, worker, environmental, and civil rights protections for all. Before entering Congress, Keith served in the Minnesota House of Representatives for four years. He practiced law as a criminal defense and civil rights attorney for 16 years, including five years as executive director of the Legal Rights Center.
Keith earned his law degree from the University of Minnesota in 1990. He is the father of four adult children: Isaiah, a County prosecutor; Jeremiah, a Minneapolis City Council member; Elijah, an Army veteran and nurse; and Amirah, a lawyer.
