“Marx” was born as Marcus Lenard Robert Herbst at St. Joseph’s Hospital in St. Paul MN. His love for hip hop began when he was just a youth. At just 12 years old, he put his pen to the page and constructed his first rhyme and has been filling up notebooks ever since, compiling a lifetime of material. In 2005, Marx realized he had a world-wide hip hop community at his finger tips when he joined a popular website called LetsBeef.com and quickly worked his way through the ranks. By the end of 2005, he was ranked 66 out of a whopping 60,000 emcees on the site, and was recording songs with many talented artists from the US all the way to the UK.
The Twin Cities local hip hop scene got its first taste of Marx in 2009 with the release of his first project, an EP entitled St. Paul Times. Shortly after the release he began performing locally in many validated Minnesota concert venues. Not only was he building a name for himself at this time, but he was developing a sound. Today, Marx’s writing, recording and live performance skills continue to flourish. In 2010 Marx linked up with Minnesota independent powerhouse, Sp Style which is led by the legendary DJ D.Mil. This was a big step for the emcee as he had always been a fan of the label and its members. Along with earning his stripes and becoming a Sp Style All-Star, he also joined a new rap group called Loudmouth with label mate I-Junk and St. Cloud DJ/Producer, Lawst.
The year 2011 brought many new and exciting opportunities for the budding emcee, which he has taken full advantage of. Marx packed up a duffle bag and joined label mate Absent on his regional tour(s), performing throughout the Midwest with the likes of Stevie Stone (Strange Music), Skatterman (Bigg Shot Music), and more. He has also recently performed locally with national recording artists Joell Ortiz, Saigon, Immortal Technique, Talib Kweli, Bone Thugs N Harmony, Too $hort, Bone Crusher, Stevie Stone, Glasses Malone and more.
Fans of Marx have much to look forward to in 2012 as he plans the 1st quarter release of his debut solo project entitled the Been Writing LP, which will be followed shortly after by the release of his group project called the Loudmouth Album. Marx plans to continue touring alongside label mate Absent with upcoming concert dates booked in Missouri, Illinois, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota and North Dakota, as well as opening up for many prominent national recording artists visiting Minnesota’s largest concert venues. Marx has proven himself to be a hard working, evolving artist whose music continues to plateau with each verse written, and is sure to continue to make his presence felt for years to come. At this point, it seems, he has only just begun!
