BrassZilla was founded by multi-instrumentalist Hal Longley (sousaphone) along with Zach Zins (trombone) and Bob DeBoer (trumpet) somewhere around 2011. It was a way for the trio to regain their bearings in the midst of loud rock shows, and to explore their love of jazz, funk, and other forms. Longley composes and arranges for the group. The three met and played together in the band Chooglin', and all have been involved in other projects. Longley (Century Brass, Selby Avenue Syncopaters); DeBoer (GST); Zins (10W-40). Andy Deckard (Collective Unconscious, Mammy Nuns, 10W-40) joined BrassZilla in 2017 on drums.
