Trampled by Turtles mandolinist Erik Berry began as a guitar player at age 12, but later discovered a love for other instruments, including the bass, which he played in several bands. At age 24, he picked up the mandolin, and found that the chords he liked to strum on the guitar and the percussion lines he enjoyed playing on the bass could both be done on the mandolin. At his solo shows he plays an instrumental mixture of original compositions, Celtic and bluegrass, sometimes accompanied on upright bass by Matt Mobley.
