Vansire is the project of Josh Augustin and Samuel Winemiller, two high school friends from Minnesota that began recording music together after meeting on their school’s drumline. An unabashedly DIY affair, all of their music is created in basements and bedrooms, self-released to a burgeoning online scene of bedroom pop listeners and creators. Three years of grassroots hype has seen Vansire has grow from a summer side-project to a legitimate musical name with wide-ranging collaborations and multiple releases.
April 2018 saw the release of their album Angel Youth. Augustin’s ambient synth washes, Dilla-informed percussive sensibilities and bookish lyricism combine with Winemiller’s sweeping guitar landscapes and warbled, Bibio-esque tones to form a wholly unique sound. Aided by Isaac Winemiller’s easy going funk-infused bass stylings (live and in some of the band’s catalogue), the music is a sonic reflection of the Midwest’s driftless region which they call home.
