Formed in summer 2011, Theeves are an experimental art-rock trio made up of Joe Schweigert (bass, vocals), who formerly fronted local groups Military Special and Look Down; his brother Walken Schweigert (violin), who also travels with multimedia vagabond arts troupe Unseen Ghost Brigade; and Jordan Hansen (drums), who plays solo as Hey, Haberdasher. Joe’s bass is overdriven; his ’90s-alt vocal is distorted through a telephone mic. Walken’s violin is played through reverb and delay pedals, with just enough noise. Jordan plays smooth, lilting breaks and fills throughout. Altogether, it’s minimal, sweeping, and occasionally epic, with a pleasant post-Pumpkins glow about it that feels familiar—yet wholly unbleak. [Todd Pitman, Switchblade Comb]
