89.3 The Current's Fifth Birthday Party
SOLID GOLD
Let’s get this out of the way up top: no, Solid Gold is not a syndicated top 40 countdown show which aired from 1980 to 1988 featuring the Solid Gold Dancers. But I could see the Solid Gold Dancers doing a fine routine to a couple of Solid Gold’s numbers—maybe the slinky “Bible Thumper,” or the dreamier “Who You Gonna Run To?” Now that we’ve cleared that up, here’s the deal: Solid Gold is a band with the ability to compel you to Shake. Your. Ass.
P.O.S
P.O.S built his reputation as an innovator, with an unlikely punk rock past and expressive, honest content. He re-earns the accolades with every release. He manages to capture his charisma on his records; they’re driving and sincere, the dark moments counterbalanced by some giggling banter with the engineer.
LOOKBOOK
Lookbook was formed in mid-2008 by Maggie Morrison (Digitata) and Grant Cutler (Passions, Tomhanks) in Minneapolis. Combining Cutler’s sparkling, synth-laden sounds and sparse guitar with Morrison’s Pat Benatar-meets-Chrissie Hynde vocals, the band garnered rave reviews and an energetic following for a sound that’s at once familiar and unique.
