UNKNOWN PROPHETS
Most hip-hop fans around the country know there's something strangely special about the Twin Cities scene. They can flash their indie cred like a fanned out fistful of Franklins just by rattling off a few of the most recognizable names -- Atmosphere and Eyedea & Abilities come to mind. But there's another duo that has quietly helped define their city's place in hip-hop culture since the turn of the millennium: The Unknown Prophets.
GUANTE & BIG CATS!
Guante & Big Cats! are a hip hop duo. Guante raps and Big Cats! produces. Sometimes they perform as a duo, and sometimes they play backed by a full band. Their new album, An Unwelcome Guest, is a concept album that mixes radical politics, superhero mythology, zombies and a continent-spanning love story. Buy it here. Guante is a rapper, spoken-word artist, activist, writer and educator. A 2008 City Pages Artist of the Year, URB Magazine "Next 1000" pick, multiple Independent Music Awards nominee and 2009 National Poetry Slam champion, he is signed to Tru Ruts/Speakeasy Records.
TRAMA
Hailing from Queens, NY, Trama started rhyming at age 13. In a recent interview with the rapper, he states that he was heavily influenced by old-school Hip-Hop. The late 80s and artists like Rakim, Kool G Rap, Big Daddy Kane, Public Enemy, NWA, and Run DMC helped Trama find his merit as a musical artist.
