HotDish presents NATE LAURENCE & J MATTHEWS
NATE LAURENCE
If persistence and passion is a recipe for success, Nate Laurence (Minneapolis, MN, USA) characterizes the journey. Nate is the quadruple threat: veteran DJ since 1994, prolific producer, event-coordinator, and label owner.

Nate has always been a DJ first. Once known as DJ Unity – a patron of former Minneapolis RAVE troupe “UNIK Communications” – Nate has labored for his place in house music. A career that developed over the course of a decade – largely behind the scenes – has now become impossible to ignore. Amid absurd energy behind the decks – layered with dexterous turntablism – Nate impresses even the most cynical critics one at a time “leaving wows in his wake.” Today, Nate remains active with gigs reaching as far as Europe, Southern Africa, and throughout the United States. Though national and international bookings keep him busy, in 2009 Nate fulfilled an enduring aspiration and true privilege by becoming a resident DJ at the legendary First Avenue Nightclub in Minneapolis.
After living in his second home of Cape Town, South Africa in 2001, Nate focused on production. Since then, his discog has grown at a reputable pace. With rookie releases on Flatpack Traxx, Funkfield, and Control Recordings, Nate proved his aptitude as a gifted producer. His distinct tech-meets-Chicago house production style has continued to mature, signing EPs with Spatula City, Guesthouse, Love Network, Onethirty, Mindtravel, and Flapjack Records to name but a few. He has also provided remixes for some of the biggest names in EDM: DJ Dan, Inland Knights, Chuck Love, Bryan Jones, and many others. In 2007, Nate partnered with Chicago-based beatmaker, Scrubfish (Scott Kammer) and together they continue to reach Top100 lists worldwide while each new release continues to outshine subsequent releases.
In 2008 Nate created HotDish. HotDish is both a collaborative of DJs (Nate and good friend J Matthews) and an event crew that has become an illustrious house movement in Minneapolis. Finally, in 2011 Nate began a new philanthropic record label, Pluralistic Records. Pluralistic Records releases distinct and unique tracks that cross the boundaries between Chicago, Detroit, disco house, and tech house...or simply, house. Notably, Nate (the academic) is also a Social Justice advocate, activist, and educator working at the University of Minnesota. This part of him is infused in his music, his branding, and all that he works to accomplish. Keep your eyes open for this talented and very different househead - who continues to give his all to keep the music fresh and far-reaching.
J MATTHEWS
Under the moniker “DJ Nickles,” J Matthews has made incalculable cameo appearances at nearly every Twin Cities nightclub and multiple raves since the early 90s, in addition to high-profile performances at the long running “Bump” at the Phoenix Landing in Cambridge, MA. Today, Matthews continues to showcase his talent throughout the cities while holding down his residency at First Avenue and working tirelessly on his International on-line radio show “Funk Yeah FM” on ChicagoHouseFM.com. He has quickly gained respect from both clubbers and ravers alike and after many years of hard work, he’s no doubt a Twin Cities staple.

“Growing up with a family that has a love for musical expression has certainly helped me to be a DJ. Plus, being a part of the Midwest dance community has taught me so much about this music, and how rich and diverse it can be. I have been graced with the opportunity to have house as a part of my life, and I will never take it for granted.” – j matthews
HOTDISH
HotDish is both a collaborative of djs (Nate Laurence & J. Matthews) and a Minneapolis-based event crew. HotDish values the diversity of EDM in the Midwest, yet it is our aim to provide a space for - above all else - funky, new-school, and soulful house music in the Twin Cities. HotDish (hosts of the best funky-house parties in the Twin Cities since 2006) showcases talent that is pioneering and unifying - both local and international icons of this genre.

HotDish (1ST SATURDAYS @ BLACK) occurs EVERY FIRST SATURDAY of the month at the infamous First Avenue Record Room. The HotDish Mission: to provide a venue for the HotDish sound while fostering the local scene in a spirit of collaboration and unity. Guiding principles make us aware of malicious social structures so we encourage both diversity and philanthropy. We reach out to foster the underground EDM and hip-hop cultures of the Twin Cities to preserve who we are.
BLACK
Every Saturday in The Record Room
Saturday nights in the Record Room are thudding with the sounds of the underground while an eclectic mix of party-goers gather downstairs for Too Much Love. The music upstairs - a fervent big brother to the sounds below - is hosted by techno heads Particle People, techno/house dynamos Loud + Clear, and funky house doctors HotDish. These three crews work collectively to institute a dance-culture favorite in Minneapolis - fittingly dubbed BLACK (if you've been in the Record Room, you know why).
CHRISTIAN JAMES
Utter his name around 17-year-old raver chicks and watch them beam brighter than their glowsticks. This frenzied, bleach-blond bombshell really only detonated amid the congested clique of Minneapolis club DJs a year ago. But he's almost instantly turned the city's head. And while some of the veterans on the scene stick to the tables at a single club, 23-year-old James has freaked feet on dance floors at the Gay 90's and the Quest, and in Warehouse District garages and a Columbia Heights basement bowling alley, too.
