Genius of Fun, First Avenue and City Pages present BASSGASM 6
5 Stage Super-Event / Sound Of The DJ Underground
The Wall Of Bass Sound System
TICKETS ON SALE NOW
Like an unstoppable comet fueled by glowstick fluid, Bassgasm 6 is sprinting through time and will be here soon on March 23. Since the inaugural event in February 2010, this is the sixth installment of the rave-in-a-club evening at First Avenue, and our own Midwest techno legend ESP Woody McBride is at the helm. As we have the last five parties, City Pages is sponsoring the giant neon gala and we're happy to announce the lineup now. Once again it merges electronic artists from varied points of dance music history, but this time gives a bigger nod to those who McBride thinks are making waves today.
Anyone old enough to have gone to parties in 2000 remembers Detroit Grand Pubahs, or at least the song that made the two weirdos behind the moniker club-famous. "Sandwiches" was the peak-time dance hit that took rather minimal house music and married it with ghetto tech and lyrics that would sound a lot more sleazy had it not been sung in a miniature voice: "You can be the bun / And I can be the burger, girl / Out here on the dancefloor / We can make sandwiches..."
Rounding out the nostalgia factor is a collective of house DJs that, once upon a time, were the most influential in the local house scene. For a decent stretch of the '90s and '00s, the Minneapolis Soul Music Collective ran 'tings upstairs at First Avenue with Beatopia and injected feel-good vibes to all within earshot of the 'tables. We can't recall the last time Dave Drone, Monte Hilleman, Bryan Gerrard and Alex Jarvis all played together at a gig, so this one will be particularly special -- especially when you add Jezus Juice to the mix. Young ravers won't recall this, but before Soviet Panda commanded things on Saturdays with Too Much Love, Juice preceded him with his long-running System 33 dance nights that were always a blast.
And now to the new(er) school. Dubstep gets its floor play with DJ Minnesota (who is from here but doesn't live here) and TC Dubstep's Profesher Billy Blacklight. Close kin to the genre, Bass music is represented with Tipper, who McBride champions as a pioneer and a guy who aided in building one of the largest car stereos ever (two cars acted as the right and left speaker respectively). All things considered, the dude is sure to blow away the dancefloor. [Jen Boyles, City Pages]
TIPPER
Dave Tipper is a British composer and producer specializing in electronic music that ranges from Ambient, through Trip Hop, to uptempo Nuskool Breakbeat. His live performances consist largely of his own unreleased compositions, and he is highly regarded for scratching his own sounds over his music, creating a live element of turntablism stemming from prowess early in his career as a vinyl DJ.

DJ MINNESOTA
Christian Bauhofer at first glance comes off as the unassuming dude yawning next to you in class, a kind of lumberjack-nerd fusion in his glasses and scruffy facial hair. However, wait until the sun goes down and add a couple drinks and a whole lot of bass — and quiet, smiley Christian assumes his party-crushing alter-ego: Minnesota. “My goal is to make bass-heavy dubstep/glitch-hop music that'll get you dancing, but is not the same old, three-note transformer-step ... I try to focus more on the melodic side of dubstep, and hopefully, make quality songwriting a more relevant factor in the genre.” Bauhofer says.
OFFICIAL :: MYSPACE :: FACEBOOK :: TWITTER :: MADISON HOUSE
In the past two years his producing has taken off, with both originals and remixes gaining great popularity on sites like Soundcloud.com. In Minnesota productions, big influences show through from songwriters Bauhofer looks up to — artists such as Mimosa, Martyparty, and Modeselektor. His first EP Panda Snatching Tycoon was released to great acclaim in January 2011 on Tycho Records, featuring three original tracks: “Push It,” “Purple Daze,” and “Twisted.”
Minnesota tracks are heard in dubstep/glitch sets all over the world, including those from DJs Reid Speed, Marty Party, Blackheart, and Rastatronics, to name a few. His latest and greatest remix of “California Dreamin’” by the Mamas & the Papas has been getting tons of play — most notably by dubstep trailblazer Bassnectar a.k.a. Lorin Ashton, on his current U.S. tour. “Quickly becoming a staple in my sets,” Ashton said about Minneosta track “Push It,” “Perfect for when I need a track that is epic and churning but also melodically hype."
One of the best things about Bauhofer is his incredible diversity in both his production and DJ sets. Any promoter can be assured that a bill featuring the name Minnesota on it will be pleasing to any crowd. He has opened for a wide range of acts, from Flying Lotus to Ghostland Observatory, Rusko to Benny Benassi, RJD2 to Excision, and many more. The future looks bright for Bauhofer, so much so that he is taking a break from UC Santa Cruz this spring to focus strictly on music. With multiple EPs coming out on MalLabel and Simplify records in the next few months, this might be Bauhofer’s smartest move yet.
DETROIT GRAND PUBAHS
Originally founded by Mack Goudy Jr. (Paris The Black Fu) and Andy Toth (Dr. Toefinger) in Detroit back in 1998 today’s Detroit Grand Pubahs consist of Paris, his alter egos and the Mysterious Mr O: butcher extraordinaire. The Pubahs are no novelty act. There is method to the madness and bass in the badness. Its just that something went awry in the funk lab and Paris The Black Fu just hasn’t been feeling himselves ever since. It’s all about personality (well split personalities) and a mission to put the fun(k) back into techno. For many the realm of a faceless façade, Paris sets out to engage the crowd and bring the party. And that’s what it was all about in the first place, wasn’t it?
OFFICIAL :: MYSPACE :: DISCOGS :: TWITTER :: RESIDENT ADVISOR
The teaming of Mack Goudy Jr. (aka Paris the Black Fu aka the Schizophrenic Brainchild of Funkno aka Dr. Bootygrabber) & The Mysterious Mr O was a natural disaster waiting to happen. Miraculously, the personalities of these two tweaked characters seemed to compliment each other perfectly and instantly bonded them together. The original Pubahs started out on Brian Gillespie’s tiny indie ‘Throw’ label, releasing the underground club hit ‘Sandwiches’. When a Jive Electro A&R man, dutifully out buying records at a local strip club, heard it he immediately knew he had something special and prepared to unleash it on the world. Since then, they've scored a pop hit in a number of countries and an underground classic worldwide. They’ve also taken their live show to another level, with Paris donning multiple costumes and personalities and encouraging the crowd to participate in the funk.
At some point during the lab stage process of Dr. Bootygrabber’s ass transplant the Mysterious Mr. O’s talents with a meat cleaver came into their own and the Pubahs become two again. Adding more steel (and of course dashing looks) to the Pubahs roadshow this non-stop techno/electro act has been all around the world and back taking their electronic lo-fi funk into clubs and large festivals alike. Move your ass and your mind will follow. The Pubahs now also run their own label, Det.Ele.Funk (or to give it its full title ‘Detroit Electronic Funk’) and Paris has been with guest vocals for Steve Bug, The Advent, Marc Romboy, Samuel L Session, Deetron, to name a few.

PROFRESHER
Profresher AKA Billy Blacklight according to some is responsible for 'crunk-flavored beats' and 'neo-g-funk' basslines that set a bold stage for the crisp synth lines that cruise on top. Listening to the album from beginning to end is like playing the PS1 Gran Turismo in a subwoofer-laden submarine while sippin' on some 'tussin. There's a late-90s throwback vibe throughout, as well as enough bass to make even the skinniest booty clap 'til dawn.

DAVID DRONE
David Drone is co-owner of Celebrity Records and is one-half of the production team “the DeeGees”. He was born in Minneapolis and still makes it his home. Since the late 70’s, David has always been into music. His passion started when he would go down to the local record store and buy a few 45’s with his allowance and play “radio DJ” for his friends. Since then, his record collection has grown to over 15,000 records strong ranging from Disco to Rock to House to Jazz. If it was a good record, he wanted it, regardless of the style.
In 1989, David started his real Dj career by playing at underground house parties and clubs. Since then, he has played all over the US and got his first chance to play overseas in 2001 at the famous Love Parade as part of a 10 day European tour. He has held several residencies around Minneapolis, including being the warm up DJ at Paisley Park for Prince and opening for David Bowie on his 1996 tour. By 1996, David was fed up with there being no dance music store in Minneapolis, so he took it upon himself to open up the first all vinyl dance store in town, Bassment Records. For the past 6 years, he has manned the store 6 days a week. Moving slowly into production, David has had several releases on his own, and teaming up with Bryan Gerrard as the DeeGees, as well as being part of Mindphaseone and legendary Minneapolis techno group AutoKinetic.

ZARBEAT
Raul Rodriguez, best known as Zarbeat, was born and raised in one of the biggest cities in the – world Mexico City. At a very young age, he recalls being exposed to musical artists such as Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream among many other artists he learned about from his father and uncle. As an inquisitive young niño, he was always curious and analyzed how the music came together, and most importantly, tried to figure out how it was made. It wasn’t until the age of 12 when Raul experienced his first clandestine electronic music event; after that he knew he had to contribute to music one way or another.
FACEBOOK :: TWITTER :: RESIDENT ADVISOR :: SOUNDLCOUD
Zarbeat started by investing in his first set of belt driven turntables and a mixer. Eventually he started purchasing records…and soon enough started playing all around the city. Looking for a more progressive evolution, Raul ventured off to Chicago at the age of 18 where eventually started to play for a few crews on a monthly basis. After pushing his limits as a Dj using 3 to 4 turntables, fx, and samplers, he took a break to learn how to compose and arrange his own music. His passion for music and thirst for innovation drove him to take risks. The only approach to learn was going to be by experimentation. After an extensive search and unending practice, Rodriguez produced his first self accomplished track! His next milestone would be to master the art of a “Live Performance”. His goals included incorporating synths, OSC, iPads, midi controllers, pedals, and drum machines. Zarbeat’s music is constantly morphing and shaping into unique forms and original styles of dance floor adaptation. Techno is the main direction; his live performances are full of energy and experimentation. Along with improvisation, Zarbeat strives to connect with partygoers from start to finish.

Combining elements of UK Hard House, NrG, UK Tech, Acid Trance and Italian Techno, he left the crowd exhausted, but wanting more. With articulate mixes, spontaneous track selection and skillful use of the Pioneer effects box; he truly carved out a niche and created his own unique style.

Over the years, his hunger for experiencing new things and his curiosity for new sounds has brought him to where he is today. With the addition of Stantons Final Scratch, he has been able to experiment with other styles of electronic music and can now be heard playing his special blend of Minimal Techno, Glitchy House and Electro. There is also a bit of down-tempo in his arsenal, so he can almost always play a style to suit the timeslot. "Sure, I could play just about anything, but the Minimal Hotness is where it's at. JESSE JAKOB
Jesse's love affair with house and techno began in the mid 1990's where he began promoting events and DJ'ing in Minneapolis. Most recently though, he was a founding member and resident DJ at Black, Minneapolis' longest running underground house and techno weekly. Held in the Record Room at the legendary First Avenue night club for 5 years, Black was the outlet for forward thinking underground house and techno in the city. Put on by a collective of different promoters over the years, Black was a fixture every Saturday night, giving it's attendees an opportunity to experience world class acts up close and personal in an intimate setting.
RESIDENT ADVISOR :: FACEBOOK :: SOUNDCLOUD
Those 5 years played a pivotal role in his development as both a DJ and producer. Having a regular DJ gig for the first time, Jesse was able to perfect the art of the warm up set. Where other DJ's start off the night running, Jesse learned to slow things down, set the mood and slowly craft a vibe and build the tension before the featured guest would take the controls. While the opening sets taught him to dig deep musically, it was his closing sets where he was able to really let things fly and learned to command a dance floor. Heavy, intense, stripped down house and techno, those peak time sets would also play an influential role in his development as a producer. Using his sets and the system at Black as a test lab, Jesse would make music strictly for these performances, and over time sessions helped to evolve and define his sound. Jesse made his production debut with a 12" release on Jonas Kopp's Traut Muzik imprint late in 2012 which received heavy support from some of the biggest names in techno. With more original productions set to be released on a variety of labels in 2013, it's shaping up to quite a year.
AARON BLISS
Originally from New Orleans, Aaron Hart aka Aaron Bliss has been actively promoting, DJing and performing live PA’s since his move to the Midwest in 1995. His move to the Midwest came after a brief but intense 2 plus-year induction period to the underground techno sound via the New York City Rave Scene from 93-95, which landed Aaron smack dab in the middle of a dance music epoch that changed his life forever.
MYSPACE :: FACEBOOK :: TWITTER :: RESIDENT ADVISOR
The constant exposure to the emerging house phenomenon at major clubs/events such as Living Room, Smack, Nasa, and Bliss (which he later jacked for his DJ alter ego) shaped his formative years and started him on his journey to find his own sound. Although his early influences range from hip-hop, industrial, rave, house, and techno, Aaron’s sound today explores the deep, jazzy, and funky side of Techno and House. He is currently a member/founder of Particle People Mpls promotions group with his good friend Jesse Jakob (which also performs live together as Jack Complex) and has a residency at Minneapolis’ famed First Ave night club hosting the BLACK series of events since 2007.

DJ JEFF HUNTER
Jeff Hunter was born and raised in St. Paul, Minnesota and while in high school, Jeff heard his first 'techno' song. It was 'James Brown is Dead' by L.A. Style. This was to be the beginning of his transformation into what we call a 'techno-head'. The second catalyst of this transformation came about when Jeff journeyed to Duluth, Minnesota to attend college. While at college he had the opportunity to get a time slot on KUMD public radio. He hooked up with dj Diene and they became 'The Harmonic Sideshow'. This is where Jeff Hunter learned the sacred art of beat matching.

The third and final key to Jeff's transformation happened in the summer of 1998. He and some friends went to Milwaukee for a party. When Jeff got there he realized that this wasn't just a party, it was a rave. Proceed 98', outside Milwaukee, Wisconsin in a recreation center was where Jeff's transformation into a techno-head became complete. Jeff has been back in the Twin Cities for quite a while now and he's been one of the driving forces behind the increasing popularity of breakbeat music in Minnesota and the surrounding states. His style is comprised mostly of various breakbeat sounds, including Funky, Acid, Progressive, and Nu-Skool Breaks.

1999 was when we decided to stream to the world the love of Chicago House music. The response was phenomenal. Chicago House Rocks was the name of our site and the hits were coming in like a boxing match. A few years into Internet radio, a small dispute about our name CHR became an issue with leading the team no choice but to change the name. But it wasn't long before we rose from the drama and continued on as a team as www.themovement.fm. I've always enjoyed being a Dj. Witness a man who prides himself most on the common bond he shares with his dance music family; a man who treats the mutual inspiration given & received like his most cherished family heirloom, and who's passion for dance music will most definitely inspire far past bar close.

CHARLIE ECHO
i’ve been doing this for almost a decade. i like driving floors full of people into a wild gyrating dancing frenzy (she’s not looking right now, call amnesty international, please!). my first love is house but lately i’ve been getting into techno (seriously, she hits me, i have scars). i don’t do weddings, dumb-step, or trance.
