MOD SUN

MOD SUN

MOVEMENT ON DREAMS. STAND UNDER NONE. “I think the suns comin’ out”, says 24 year old Dylan Smith. He is positive his positivity will bring him something positive. “The two things I base my life around and continue to stay passionate about are music and “the secret”. I know that thinking about what you want will bring you…..what you want. I know what I want and I know I’m going to get what I want. Once I figured that out there wasn’t much to be unhappy about. I’m not even kidding when i say….I’m always happy, and people really seem to notice that. Some literally tell me that I make them feel better just being around…there’s really not much better of a compliment than that. With my music I take that feeling and turn it into a sound. I know i could write “break up” songs, or “the worlds got me down” songs but I honestly don’t think about those things. I ONLY think happy thoughts…..and i can promise you, it works.”

Dylan has been pursuing music at a serious level since age 14. “My first instrument was a Fender strat my dad got me for christmas when i was 9. I didn’t really know anything about music at that point so the guitar didn’t interest me much. I’m totally serious when i say this…..the band “HANSON” gets full credit for getting me into music. I grew up with an older sister, and I just remember all her friends coming over and going crazy over these dudes. Zac Hanson (the drummer) seemed to get the most girls so naturally…i chose to play drums. From that moment on, all I wanted to do was play music and tour. I played in a bunch of bands growing up (the semester, sideline heroes…) and then joined “Four Letter Lie”. We were signed by the time I was 18 and did nothing but tour. I love drums but I always wanted to interact with the crowd more. While touring I started to freestyle, I’m a funny dude so making people laugh wasn’t ever a problem. I could go on forever just rhymin about whatever was in front of me. People started tellin me to record some tracks and the rest is history.”

MOD SUN released his first CD (a full-length) titled, I’ll Buy Myself, on January 31, 2009. It featured 11 songs, all of which were original beats made by MOD SUN himself. The songs were written and recorded over a 8 month span from May to December 2008. Every song was recorded in his bedroom and produced by him and only him. He did it all by himself…hence the name of the record. “I downloaded some programs, bought a keyboard, bought a mic, and started to go at it. That was about four years ago now. Along the way i didn’t “create” my sound, I found my sound.” MOD SUN released his first free mixtape titled Let Ya Teeth Show in July 2009. It features 11 brilliant new songs including the heavily loved track, “No Girlfriend”. It’s got party-anthems, dreams-come-true songs, get high tracks, and really just captures that “the suns out!” vibe. MOD SUN recently released his second free mix tape How To Make A MOD SUN. It includes 17 new original songs and remixes. H2MAMS paints the picture of his thoughts about growing up and teaches you the steps it took to get to where he currently stands today. Very well-written with get wordplay and punchlines, but doesn’t rely on either of those to get his point across. “I care about the first 3 letters of the word ‘artist’. I take my word very seriously.”

MAC IRV

MAC IRV

North side Minneapolis born and bred Mac Irv gained a love for all music at an early age which stemmed from living next door to Fred Steele of the gospel music legends the "Steele Family" and directly across the street from musician Cornbread Harris, father of the legendary Jimmy Jam. Also inspired by "The artist Formerly known as Prince" a legendary musician who comes from the exact neighborhood where Mac Irv grew up with his extraordinary singing, song writing, and performing ability.

Since Mac Irv could talk his grandfather was teaching him how to rhyme, which then developed to him putting small poems and raps together to perform for his friends and family. From there him and two friends actually put together a rap group when he was nine years old. But Mac also had another love. Basketball took up all the time that music didn't, and almost overtook the music because of his exceptional talent on the court. As he grew up he became more and more heralded for his play on the court, but continued to constantly write and listen to music anytime that he could. Mac Irv was swamped with expectations on the hardwood and slowly started to live his music dreams through friends who were involved solely with music.

Spending time on the court, then spending time in the studio with still a strong infatuation for music. Making music on the court got him a full scholarship to play division one basketball at the University of Oklahoma and the University of Minnesota where he decided to start recording on a computer at a friends house anytime that he had a chance between studying and practice. After graduating college he traveled to Europe to play professionally which gave him a chance to focus a little more writing and getting back to his love for music once again. From there he spent some time in the NBDL but ended up having surgery which was the turning point to his music career. Mac had time to think and create the music on how he was feeling at the time which was somewhat of a musical healing and was able to start record seriously. From this point on the music had totally taken over. As soon as he hopped in the booth the feeling was more than amazing. It felt like it was meant to be. His voice intertwined with the music sounded heavenly.

He knew that this was exactly what he was suppose to be doing. His lyrics and delivery were similar to someone who has been recording for years. The same swagger and passion he had on the court shined right through with his music. Mac is the sole definition of hip hop, extremely lyrical but also very woman friendly with the music and on the EYES. Mac Irv is a very straight forward, witty and truthful story teller who only talks about real life experiences, failed expectations, relationships, having fun and chasing dreams, which so many can relate to. The music is an outlet he uses as a open diary to the world. Almost a best of both worlds. From the city, but has the college experience so he easily relates to everybody which leaves numerous stories to be told, which you can tell from his music.

CULTURE CRY WOLF

Photo Credit: Daniel De La Torre

Minneapolis based Culture Cry Wolf have steadily built a following with their eclectic and infectious live show. While most live-band hip-hop acts center on funk or jazz as their sonic roots, Culture Cry Wolf are all over the map, pulling in everything from cumbia to doo-wop to ska and punk. Botzy's raps and Mike Daly's crooning keep the varied vibe centered, matching the raucous trumpet, guitars, and percussion with upbeat tales of drunken revelry and torrid love affairs. In concert, the six-piece band whips up a wholly unique energy that is hard to define and harder to resist.

OFFICIAL SITE  ::  FACEBOOK  ::  TWITTER

Culture Cry Wolf has played countless sold out shows, been nominated as "The Twin Cities Best Band" two years in a row, and shared the stage with the likes of: Macklemore, Cecil Otter, Mac Lethal, Sims, Mr. Dibbs and Soulcrate Music. Most bands adopt musical styles out of an attempt to preempt the next wave of short-term musical revisionism, and then there are the bands that would be making that kind of noise whether it was fashionable or not -- Culture Cry Wolf is firmly among the latter.

THE LIONESS

THE LIONESS

She was born in the spring of 1988 at North Memorial hospital in Robbinsdale, MN, approximately 50 paces away from the north side of Minneapolis, where she was raised and now resides. She is the last of 2 girls’ and 4 boys’, all except the eldest son are the seed of her father John Adams, but all issued from the womb of Jayne Johnson. She is a product of the cliché and tragedy that befalls many, but specifically those in the "black" community.

OFFICIAL  ::  FACEBOOK  ::  TWITTER  ::  BANDCAMP  ::  REVERBNATION

In 2010 she would make history becoming the first to graduate from college in her family with a degree of Associate of Applied Science in Recording Technology. Her hustle is uncanny, drive is relentless, swag is incomparable. This individual is familiar with the territory that failure governs. Tribulation and costly mistakes have helped forge the design that you so easily recognize. On this trek much has been achieved, but even more has been lost never to be regained. The offspring of sin, disease and violence have left her bereft of multiple close friends and relatives. Who will not be able to celebrate the arrival of an aspiring artist whose dreams are becoming reality.

Inspired by the death of her loved ones the critically acclaimed single, "Streets on Fire" off of her mix tape was written and debuted on the local radio station KMOJ. Tears fused with ink to send out a cease-fire and memorial to the families of the souls no longer present. From the concrete jungle emerged The Lioness, as ferocious as they come. A pseudonym given to her by her brother in arms because he believed that many of her characteristics were congruent with the felines. Her plans are elaborate, but she realizes that to whom much is given much is required. Faith, patience and love are a few of her loyal companions on this journey through life. YAH her ELohim knowing what her future holds may, because of her obedience give her a glimpse of it.

XAVIER MARQUIS

Xavier Marquis (pronounced Zay-vee-air Mar-key), was born in Minneapolis, MN. Xavier’s knack for music and rhythm was evident at a young age. At the age of 9, Xavier started writing his first rhymes. In the 5th grade, at age 10, Xavier formed his first rap group that went by the name “The Little XDL” with his cousin Dom Davis aka Dearling Physique. At age 16, he purchased his first keyboard. It was that keyboard that helped Xavier hone his production skills. In 2002, Xavier was introduced to Ray Seville of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis’ company Flyte Tyme, and immediately started producing for various artist’s. During his stint at Flyte Tyme, Xavier vigorously studied the production of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis past work and created his own unique formula to producing hits that took his songwriting, rapping, and production skills to a new level. “The time I spent at Flyte Tyme was essential to my growth as a music producer and artist. There was so much history there. Just to know that you were recording in the same place that Michael and Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Boys II Men, and Usher once recorded in is breathtaking and motivating.”

In 2007, Xavier started his production company, Findin’ Muziq. The name Findin’ Muziq was chosen because of Xavier’s strong desire to find and create a new sound in mainstream music. In 2009, Xavier focused on his first mixtape, The X-Files Mixtape: Episode 1, which was a highly anticipated mixtape full of original songs and beats that were inspired by many different styles and genre’s of music. Xavier understands the importance of versatility, saying, “I like to give listeners’ ears a full course meal. A lot of artists are either afraid or unable to step out of the box. People get tired of the same ole’ thing all the time, so I attempt to give them a little bit of everything to fill not only their appetite, but mine as well.” The critically acclaimed mixtape was successfully released March 9, 2010. In July 2011, Xavier headlined The X-Files Mixtape: Episode 2 Release Show. Accompanied by his backing band, Xavier performed to a near-capacity crowd at 7th Street Entry (First Avenue) in Minneapolis, MN. The Mixtape featured the single “Open Letter” which was awarded the Urban Finals Grand Prize by Ourstage.com. Now, Xavier is performing and promoting his latest mixtape, Episode 2. He is also working on Happy Kids, a side project with backing-band mate and long-time friend Munqs.
