The Tribe & Big Cats! operate on a simple philosophy: rap music can be fun without being stupid. It can be catchy without being formulaic. And when it’s done right, rap music will make you nod your head, whether because the MC is on point or because the beat is a banger-- or ideally, both.

Over a critically-acclaimed mixtape and full-length, rapper TruthBeTold (Chris Hooks) and producers Aye Yo Pete (Peter Gjovik) and Big Cats! have crafted a sound that ties together all of these impulses, blending the tireless DIY work ethic of the underground, the swagger and confidence of the mainstream stars and the kind of pure technical talent that defies easy categorization. It’s “real hip hop” without the elitism. It’s party rap that doesn’t have to be a guilty pleasure. It’s gimmick-free music that will make your trunk knock and your neurons fire. Earlier this year, The Tribe & Big Cats! released their debut album, Forward Thinkers Movers Shakers. The album featured guest appearances from Planet Asia, Phil Da Agony, Toki Wright, Abstract Rude, and more. City Pages called the album “... equal parts respect for hip-hop's traditional methods and efforts to progress, all couched in the desire to make you nod your head and shake your ass.”

Special Guests / Opening Acts:

ART SCHOOL GIRLS

Art School Girls is a hip-hop trio consisting of Cory Grindberg and Julian Fairbanks of Audio Perm working collaboratively on instrumentals, and Chantz Erolin on vocals. Chantz's "intelligent sense of humor, nuanced political savvy and songwriting skills" combined with Cory's synth-laden, wild aesthetics and Julian's sample heavy, beat-break and boom bap sensibilities create a high-energy, somewhat dark and ultimately hard-hitting expansion of the Minneapolis rap sound.

ALICIA STEELE AND THE ENDEAVORS

Being raised around music, hearing her father sing Harry Belafonte every morning, influenced Alicia's transition to formal vocal training; studying opera, jazz, and choral ensembles. At a young age, Alicia earned significant rolls in college musicals and studied performance at the Children’s Theater Company.

MaLLy

Being invited to play Soundset can act as a barometer of who in the local rap scene is really pushing themselves and their craft forward. Each year a few up-and-coming artists get the chance to rock the same stage as certified legends, and MaLLy not only got the opportunity to play the festival this year, he also witnessed Slug wearing one of his T-shirts during Atmosphere's closing performance. "There's only a few things I could see ever making me cry, but looking at it and just watching it happen, I almost cried," MaLLy recalls.
