MFR presents SOULCRATE MUSIC
SOULCRATE MUSIC
Blossoming during an age in which independent hip-hop was creating its own self sufficient industry, much of the Midwest was watching its artists putting their cities on the map, Soulcrate Music took the model to a new plateau. DJ Absolute and siblings Attention Def and Dirt Dee built their following from scratch in their hometown of Sioux Falls, SD, focusing on creating new style of energetic music with a high regard for soul and classic hip-hop. Quickly, the trio found itself opening local shows for national heavyweights, from Atmosphere, 311 and The Spill Canvas. Their following at home exploded overnight, selling out 400-500 capacity venues as a must see headliner. Soon focus turned to regional touring and caught the attention of Mac Lethal's Black Clover Records, who took their road show national.
MaLLy
Being invited to play Soundset can act as a barometer of who in the local rap scene is really pushing themselves and their craft forward. Each year a few up-and-coming artists get the chance to rock the same stage as certified legends, and MaLLy not only got the opportunity to play the festival this year, he also witnessed Slug wearing one of his T-shirts during Atmosphere's closing performance. "There's only a few things I could see ever making me cry, but looking at it and just watching it happen, I almost cried," MaLLy recalls.
WIDE EYES
Wide Eyes was established in 2004 by emcee Filth Phantom and producer Dimitry Killstorm. The two were later joined by emcee Sean Anonymous in 2005, and Dj Name in 2008. With the release of their first full-length album Hands Tied, the group defined their distinctive sound of intricate, heart-felt flows over hard hitting beats, setting the bar for things to come. Wide Eyes has grown from humble beginnings, to become a staple in the Minneapolis hip-hop scene.
LAST WORD
DJ LAST WORD may not be a household name, but he’s earned respect for his work producing and live mixing for local rappers like Dialogue Elevators, Ernie Rhodes, and more. He's been spinning since 2000, getting his start at former Dinkytown sandwich shop/music venue Bon Appetit.
