When Ryan Olson decided to make a record with Solid Gold members Zack Coulter and Adam Hurlburt, it was clear to them what the result would be: a collection of drugged-up keyboards and slick bedroom production almost exclusively inspired by 10cc's "I'm Not In Love." To be fair, they weren't entirely off. What they didn't know was that it would spiral into a project of epic proportions, enlisting the talents of over 25 musicians from various scenes around the country, relocating the base of operations from Olson's Minneapolis bedroom/studio to the Wisconsin-based studio April Base, and the genesis of a musical family, GAYNGS.

From the moment anyone heard Olson, Coulter, and Hurlburt's rough version of their first composition "The Gaudy Side of Town," they wanted in on it. To most of the players involved, this genre of music was quite foreign yet entirely familiar. Olson knew this, and began calling upon an eclectic cast of contributors whom he thought would share his vision, and relish in the idea of exploring uncharted musical territory within them. The first people to join the cause were North Carolina's Megafaun (Joe Westerlund, Brad Cook, Phil Cook), and with them came Ivan Howard (The Rosebuds), and Bon Iver's Justin Vernon and Mike Noyce. By mid-2009 the studio sessions were becoming more and more frequent, bouncing back and forth between April Base and Olson's bedroom. In Minneapolis, Olson brought in Rhymesayers rapper P.O.S and his fellow Doomtree artist Dessa, psych-rockers Jake Luck and Nick Ryan (Leisure Birds), song-birds Channy Moon-Casselle and Katy Morley, jazz-saxophonist Michael Lewis (Happy Apple, Andrew Bird), retro-pop duo Maggie Morrison and Grant Cutler (Lookbook), and slide-guitarist Shön Troth (Solid Gold).

Vocally, GAYNGS is a triumph. Zack Coulter (Solid Gold) shines from the jump, floating over the record with his airy, haunting melodies. Fans of Bon Iver will recognize Vernon's familiar falsetto, but will flip when they hear his Bone Thug's-style R&B. Ivan Howard sounds right at home with his sensual and breathy leads, while P.O.S. abandons his genre entirely for a soul inspired tenor. With over a dozen people contributing vocals, its incredible how cohesive the album sounds. After a year of tracking and mixing, GAYNGS officially release thed album, entitled Relayted, in Spring 2010. The initial goal was achieved perfectly, yet "Relayted" sounds refreshing and modern. With each song written at 69 BPM's, and tripped-out transitions from song to song, it is truly an audio experience from start to finish.

Special Guests / Opening Acts:

DOOMTREE

Wings and teeth. No two symbols could’ve been better chosen to represent Minneapolis rap stalwarts Doomtree. The endlessly innovative crew/label has defied categorization from the start, leaving behind convention for what’s best described as aggressive transcendence. Through a tireless work ethic, take-noprisoners production, lyrics that never shy from truth, and an always shifting stylistic mix, this family has carved out an elevated corner unto itself.

SOLID GOLD

Let’s get this out of the way up top: no, Solid Gold is not a syndicated top 40 countdown show which aired from 1980 to 1988 featuring the Solid Gold Dancers. But I could see the Solid Gold Dancers doing a fine routine to a couple of Solid Gold’s numbers—maybe the slinky “Bible Thumper,” or the dreamier “Who You Gonna Run To?” Now that we’ve cleared that up, here’s the deal: Solid Gold is a band with the ability to compel you to Shake. Your. Ass.

MEGAFAUN

The trail discovered by 2008’s Bury The Square, blazed by 2009’s Gather, Form & Fly, and tended by 2010’s Heretofore has run into a wide and rushing river. The band we know as Megafaun, born alongside Bon Iver in the ashes that rose from DeYarmond Edison (Brad Cook, Joe Westerlund, and Phil Cook’s former band with Justin Vernon), has woven years of writing, touring, and living into a new sonic language.

LEISURE BIRDS

Crawling out from the primordial muck of rhythm and reverb, Leisure Birds concoct a hallucinatory brew of squealing keyboards, thumping floor-toms, stabbing guitars, chant-like vocals and sinuous basslines. Hailing from Minneapolis, Leisure Birds sound like a lost artifact of the first psychedelic era; the British Invasion meeting swamp boogie along the muddy banks of the Mississippi.

ALPHA CONSUMER

PLAIN OLE BILL

Known in the Twin Cities as co-founder of Get Cryphy, the city's top hip-hop night, Plain Ole Bill stands apart from others behind the booth when it comes to his skill, genial attitude, and résumé. He gained recognition outside Minneapolis as P.O.S.'s touring DJ throughout most of 2009, but this year has been especially busy for Bill.

JONATHAN ACKERMAN

SLAPPING PURSES

Dance party eccrine and experimental noise abrasion may seem like distinct corners of the musical universe, but those with their nose in the Twin Cities underground know the explosive potential when the 'tween do meet. Like a methed-out Afrikaa Bambaataa scratching your itch for brain scrambling distortion, Slapping Purses is this nexus. Kick drum whumps, bass boom throbbing, garbled bombardments of sharp noise, and the most sinister command of breaks, breaks, breaks, since Marley Marl and Co.

HAR MAR SUPERSTAR

Like a butterfly emerging from a cocoon, Har Mar Superstar returned in fall 2009 with Dark Touches, his first album since 2004’s critically acclaimed The Handler. The new Har Mar retains his defiant sexiness and uncanny knack for irresistible R&B hooks, but fans his colorful wings in the spirit of inclusion. “Har Mar has always represented the most out-there and outrageous and in your face aspects of me,” says Sean Tillmann, the Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter and producer behind the Har Mar Superstar moniker.

MARIJUANA DEATHSQUADS

Marijuana Deathsquads are comprised of multiple drummers, a slew of electronic instruments, and highly effected vocals, their live shows are a violent onslaught of improvised electronic-hardcore. They began as a side-project of Building Better Bombs, which is why all members of BBB are also in Marijuana Deathsquads. Their live shows, as well as studio recordings, feature multiple colaborations with a ton of outsourced musicians. This results in a constantly evolving experience, teeming with spontaneity and surprise.

SPYDER BAYBIE RAW DOG

Spyder Baybie rawdog is from the future. During his "short" stint in the eight legged rugged rawdogs S.B.R.D was able to perfect the twin paradox. Both gravitational time dilation and special relativity were needed to explain spyder's experiment on time dilation using precise measurements and only the rawest of techniques. On one of spyder's frequent clockhops he met 2% Muck. The two began making eye contact, sweat, and fusion noise. Within hours of their first meeting ectoplasm began flowing from every hole in their body.

MOONSTONE CONTINUUM

Presently MOONSTONE is a Lunarian organization pathologically dedicated to cultivating general cultural enhancement and constructive affiliation, by ritually insisting a program of rightfulness upon the community at large. Through musical therapeutrics, spiritual consultation, and satisfaction advocacy, Moonstone transmits procedures of analytical Factualism, and individual rebrilliantation, which aid in illuminating the path of well-tendered Want and perceptual fulfillment. We have administered our program across the globe and its immediate margins, but are based in Minneapolis, MN.

ALBERT

An innovator of advent-elliptical jim wav music and luke dragon's weed, Elmore counts PE noise artist and BM musician Seth Vanhorn of Disthroned Agony, SND of Raster Noton, V/VM and Pan Sonic as key influences. Releasing music exclusively via the BBPWC web server since 2004, Elmore is the founder of Bootlegs by People Who Care and the Center for Experimentally Advanced Recordings and Research, as well as a board member of the Minneapolis Coalition for the Continuing Consideration of the Arts.
