ROPE TRICK

Meet Slim Chin, the Twin Cities’ only classically trained opera singer-turned-Gene Autry-style yodeler. Slim, known in his non-cowpoke guise as Joe Carl, is the lead singer and driving force behind honest-to-goodness old-school country band Rope Trick.  TC METRO

MARTIN DEVANEY

Martin Devaney has always embraced his local identity, literally dubbed the Mayor of St. Paul by friends and compatriots in the music scene. A classically trained musician with a jazz sax background, the accomplished singer-songwriter got his start playing with revered hip-hop ensemble Heiruspecs before embarking on a solo career. After self-releasing an EP in 2001, Martin followed with four full-length albums, each garnering more praise and attention from press and fans.

LYNHURST

Lynhurst is the sibling alternative-pop band from Minneapolis. Younger sister Mari fronts the group as its lead singer-drummer. With brothers Matt and Jake on guitars, keyboards, and harmonies, the trio delivers a big sound. Mari’s sultry-sweet voice beautifully contrasts her rocking drumming and wry lyrics about love and all that goes with it. Named after the band’s childhood park, Lynhurst began when the brothers started making music in junior high. Mari later joined and soon her voice and songwriting perspective led the band. The band members left college to play music full-time.

AARON AND THE SEA

Coming out of the Minneapolis Synth scene, they have been described with such terms as murder-pop and nightmare-pop and though the Creature, Creature LP keeps the dark themes going, it's also got brighter elements, all of which showcases a great original sound. Aaron And The Sea - which goes by AATS - is a band with a unique identity. It takes you back to the emerging period of MTV with similar keyboard focus, and the beat is slowed down a lot by today's commercial push standards.
