BIRTHDAY SUITS

Date:
Friday, May 23, 2008

Minneapolis' most utterly bombastic and unhinged duo of musical mastery known in the underground's inner circles as the Birthday Suits. Racing back and forth between genres, as well as all over the stage is nothing new for Matthew and Hideo, but this newly forged combo really widens their scope of sound to encompass different directions once thought inconceiveable by a two man operation. Everytime Birthday Suits play a show, they effortlessly shred modern 'punk' music into visceral shavings that stick under your fingernails with such a magnetic and irresistable passion in their delivery, and you can bet it's topped with nothing less than 120% aggression and style.

Since their debut in 2005, the Minneapolis-based duo of Matthew Kazama and Hideo Takahashi has excelled at tossing elements of late-‘90s mathcore and classic Reagan-era punk against the wall with disarming power and impressively fresh results. Their latest release, The Minnesota: Mouth To Mouth (Nice and Neat Records), sticks to that formula, but with a smidge more spit-polish shining up their succinct sense of melody. The Birthday Suits’ biggest asset remains the way their blurry-but-brilliant mix of sharp edges and curvy hooks matches up neatly with their dark-humored lyrics and stage presence that feels as gleeful as it does dangerous. Fans of Future of the Left and No Means No will not be disappointed. [Hannah Levin, Seattle Weekly]

Special Guests / Opening Acts:

GOSPEL GOSSIP

"Gospel Gossip is the only band that falls under the category of "shoegaze" that drives me to dance. I'm not talking about swaying my shoulders while my feet are in place like a good indie kid. I'm talking about the kind of dancing that you hope either breaks something or gets you laid. Their post punk influences surface most evidently in the throbbing bass lines and danceable drums that make you move like Ian Curtis. If you take acid or eat some of those red caps with white spots it is going to take maybe 20 minutes or so for the psychedelic experience to really kick into gear.
